Annette Taddeo victorious in hard-fought SD 40 special election

Source: Florida Politics

Democrat Annette Taddeo has won the state Senate District 40 special election, narrowly defeating Republican state Rep. Jose Felix Diaz in the hotly contested and expensive race closely watched by both state and national parties.

SD 40 wound up being more of a nail-biter than anyone first expected, as Republicans entered Election Day with only a slim 500 early-vote lead. But Hurricane Irma and its aftereffects helped the off-year race stay a low-turnout affair.

In the end, Diaz took just under 48 percent of the vote; Taddeo received 51 percent.

This was an important race to flip the state! Congratulations Taddeo. This may just be a state race but it IS an indication of the winds of this nation shifting.

Hopefully this is the beginning of a huge tide of Democratic Party wins! Florida no longer has the full run of rumpublican control.

Clinton carried the district in 2016 but a Republican won this seat at the same time, replacing a black Democratic incumbent. Diaz raised $1.4 million for this race vs. Taddeo's $344,000.

This is a big deal.

Democrat Annette Taddeo wins Miami-area state Senate seat

MIAMI

A Democratic candidate on the losing end of three previous elections is the winner over a Republican who once appeared on "The Apprentice" in a special election to fill a Florida state Senate seat.

Unofficial results show Annette Taddeo beat state Rep. Jose Felix "Pepi" Diaz in an election to fill the Miami-area seat that was left vacant when Republican Frank Artiles resigned after using the N-word in front of two black colleagues.

The 50-year-old businesswoman has run for Congress twice and was Democrat Charlie Crist's running mate in the 2014 governor's race won by Republican incumbent Rick Scott.

In 2006, Diaz appeared on President Donald Trump's reality show and was one of the first contestants to be "fired" by the billionaire. Democrats used the 37-year-old lawyer's ties to the president to stir up support for Taddeo.
