Shooting In Downtown Lawrence Kills One Woman And Two Men
Source: Kansas City Star
Gunfire erupted early Sunday morning in a crowd on Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence, killing three people and wounding two others.
Among the dead was a 22-year-old Shawnee woman whose mother had told her to go to Lawrence on Saturday night to avoid violence. Also killed were two friends from Topeka, one of them a new father.
The shooting broke out on a lively night in Lawrence with Late Night in the Phog drawing a big crowd. Downtown streets filled with people going to bars, restaurants and concerts, including the #ASSJAMZ event at the Granada Theater at 1020 Massachusetts St. It was not far from there, according to one witness account, that the trouble started with a fistfight near 11th and Massachusetts about 1:40 a.m.

This really isn't so much "News" as it is Sunday in America. Population Control. Thanks NRA!

Hate to say it, but wonder if this could be targeted shooting of the attendees of the hip hop concert.

(3,194 posts)And it's Worldwide Coverage.
3 People Die in a Kansas, U.S. shooting, and it makes the local paper. And a few people comment on a popular message board.
And gun humpers will hold out the knife attack as a comparison, and justification to ban knives (joking of course). While incidents like in France happen once a month, and U.S. Fatal Shootings happen every few minutes.

(16,199 posts)Otherwise, it would be a domestic crime story. Its just like with us and bombings of crowds in Africa and the Middle East. 80 people at a market can get wiped out and it won't even make the US nightly TV news. But carry out that same attack in a "western" country, and it's a 2 week News-a-thon.

(23,208 posts)...when I went to school there! I caught the bus in the middle of that block.
The attorney I shared the house with had his office right on the corner! Would never have thought of it as a high-crime area, though I did have my bike stolen from there.
jayhawk class of '80.
Used to go to breakfast for the best pancakes and eggs right down the street there.
Never thought of it as "high crime" area.
you were there the same time I was (fall 79 thru fall 80). Loved the bookstore on Mass. Ave. but can't remember the name of it now. Movie theatre across the street, saw Star Trek I there.

(34,104 posts)Damn, we love to go to Lawrence and hang on Mass Ave. So many things to do, a great theater (not talking about the Granada although it is also a nice theater) and lots of awesome people always.
Of all places.

(31,182 posts)Meanwhile NRA and the gun makers will force guns into schools and hospitals.
hack89
(39,171 posts)you might be wrong. A state that just passed a law restricting guns in schools I might add.
I support most gun control measures with only two exceptions - AWBs and registration.
That still leaves plenty of things that can be done. Plenty of things we can agree on.

(3,194 posts)We need National Laws. Which you won't have to worry about thanks to the help from YOUR NRA.
You think it's that difficult to carry firearms from one state to another? No more difficult than it was for the Vegas SOB to get the weapons he got.
Don't worry, all his guns are safe. They did their Job well. Be proud.

(13,490 posts)to hear about this, but things have changed in Lawrence (and Westport as the mother talks about in the video) the last several years. There has been a lot more violence both areas. Anybody can carry a gun any more and now they can carry on campus in Kansas. Just great.
