Nevada trial of Cliven Bundy postponed after Las Vegas massacre

Source: REUTERS

(Reuters) - A federal judge in Nevada postponed the trial of rancher Cliven Bundy for his role in an armed standoff with U.S. government agents, after defense lawyers argued that the Las Vegas mass shooting could influence jurors, his attorney said on Friday.

The case against Bundy stems from a 2014 revolt he is alleged to have led against federal authorities at his ranch in Bunkerville, Nevada, about 75 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro in Las Vegas granted the delay for Bundy and several co-defendants, including his sons, who are accused of conspiracy, assault and other charges, Bret Whipple told Reuters.

Prosecutors allege Bundy, 71, and his followers blocked agents with the National Park Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in 2014 from carrying out a court order.

The Mandalay shooting is not an issue of influence but a reflection of Bundy thinking.

we'd leave "fact-free" rhetoric to its addicts on the right. The ones who simply justify their behaviors these days without resorting to hyperbole and, usually, flat-out lies.

The constitutional definition of "treason" includes making war against the U.S. It does seem absolutely that Bundy could have been charged with treason had the government felt elevating his importance with that charge was wise, but the feds virtually never use it.

Same for some of his people who've already gone to trial on lesser charges and been found not guilty by biased juries. Makes me wish Bundy's trial was influenced by this mass murder, but of course we can't do that.

NY Times:

TREASON AGAINST THE UNITED STATES ... Chief Justice Chase: "That if a body of people, conspire and meditate an insurrection to resist or oppose the execution of any statute of the United States by force, they are only guilty of a high misdemeanor; but if they proceed to carry such intention into execution by force, that they are guilty of the treason of levying war; and the quantum of the force employed neither lessens or increases the crime -- whether by one hundred or one thousand persons is wholly immaterial;"

* * * "and that it is altogether immaterial whether the force used is sufficient to effectuate the object; any force connected with the intention will constitute the crime of levying war."

2. Cliven Bundy and Stephen Paddock lived a few miles apart.

Bunkerville is on the outskirts of Mesquite. We should be searching footage of the Bundy Ranch standoff for photos of Paddock.

Paddock bought the Mesquite house soon after Bundy ranch standoff.

I think that is the gist of the story that made news.

but the FBI isn't finding any links to these people in his background, not even witnesses reporting him ranting angrily about government stealing ranchland or persecuting freedom fighters over a beer.

Given we all have about 3 degrees of separation from most people on earth, and given his geographic proximity to the Bundy types, a one degree connection of a gun purchaser through a local gun shop owner doesn't seem compelling. Frankly, he sounds too intelligent and educated to buy into their foolishness.

Perhaps he just wanted to live where he felt there was a dominance of kindred gun nuts? I bet we haven't heard the last of this though. What do the Bundy lawyers know about what will be coming out?

a pretty ordinary satellite/commuter town in mostly beautiful desert that's only about an hour away from Vegas for both work and recreation. That whole part of the state's solidly conservative, except for LV itself, and growth over the past few decades means the town's too middle class suburban for the typical resident to cheer on grabbing guns and shooting federal agents.

We were acquainted with a bunch of people in LA over the decades who chose to leave a world-class city to move to places like this. In my experience the average resident may yammer about government overreach, but they're nevertheless more likely to approve authorities shooting down protesters whose activities threaten to lower their housing values.

"Nevada trial of of Stephen Paddock's neighbor, Cliven Bundy, postponed after Las Vegas massacre."

As an FYI, Las Vegas mass-murderer, Stephen Paddock, lived in Mesquite, Nevada, just northeast of the Bundy Ranch, and where Bundy and his armed supporters faced off with government agents.
