STANFORD Speaking in the heart of Silicon Valley on Friday, Hillary Clinton accused Facebook, Twitter and Google of enabling Russian agents in a plot to throw the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump.
She called for the United States to take a hard line on Russian aggression, predicting that the Kremlin would continue its attempts to influence elections as soon as next year when dozens of congressional seats will be contested.
Their weapon of choice is not tanks or missiles, but lets not mince words: This is a new kind of Cold War and it is just getting started, the former secretary of state and Democratic presidential nominee told about 500 students at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
She specifically called out Facebook, Twitter and Google for failing to do more to prevent Russia from influencing the election. Facebook is the largest news platform in the world, and with that awesome responsibility they must accept accountability, she said. Later, she added, its time for Twitter to stop dragging its heels and live up to fact that its platform is being used as a tool for cyberwarfare.

(41,832 posts)It was more detailed than this article says, plus the headline is an exaggeration.
Of course we know how news sites love to grab you with a headline that isn't exactly what the article says.

(15,512 posts)which is basically on a par with RW radio. Google at least started off well, and seemed to be setting itself up as the world's free library, but then they lost interest and turned Google books into a low-rent Amazon. Ditto Google news. Started out great, dwindled into Yahoo territory. Sad. At least they're not fake news peddlers on a par with Facebook and Twitter.

They can be very crafty when they want to be, or when they're paid to be, and finding the real story can take some digging. And that's if you know what you're looking for.

(58,785 posts)so many in the MSM are so invested in justifying the lies they've pushed about her for years now that much of the coverage will be negative. But at least they can't respond without publicizing this problem. She knows that.

(51,584 posts)to alert people about the Russian cyber war that 45 is doing nothing about. She wants Americans to take this seriously as a constant threat.
Why isn't Congress doing more? Sanctions are one thing but cyber warfare needs a fully funded and staffed government agency put into place permanently since this is ongoing and the Russians are light years ahead of us in this area. Our government should create a department that is fully funded with tech people who do this shit already.

Where they don't exist, the Russians will create them
Doesn't mean the issue doesn't exist, it just means that the Russians will do everything they can to exploit the issue and tear things apart (destabilize).

(1,399 posts)if for no other reason than that they are simply a repetition of what she has been saying and what she received tons of press for saying in "What Happened."
More importantly, because I do not discount Russian interference in our election at all, the story about Russian interference has not only been covered extensively (in particular as of late with the recent Burr/Warner press conference) AS IT SHOULD BE, that coverage has largely accepted Secretary Clinton's view that it was one of the most important factors in our 2016 loss.
Because there has been tons of coverage of Russian interference AND that coverage has been favorable to our side, Zappone's suggestion that the fact that Secretary Clinton did not get extensive coverage for repeating what she has already said multiple time (and received coverage for saying multiple times) is indicative of Russian influence in the mainstream media is simply incorrect.
As for Catalonia, the independence vote was going to come out exactly the way it did because it is the will of the people of Catalonia. Attempting to delegitimize the independence referendum, AS ZAPPONE HAS BEEN TRYING TO DO EVEN BEFORE IT WAS HELD, based on Twitter trends doesn't change that fact.

(6,916 posts)Hillary is one of the first saying openly that:
Russia Attacked The United States.
She called it "a war". She said this is an information war that Russia is waging. And we are losing.
Also, Russia spread disinformation in Catalonia. (Before it was held. By definition.)
These are attacks on Western democracy.
The media's dislike for Hillary, created by GOP billionaires and by Russia, aligns with their lack of coverage. It goes without saying that several of your points above echo Russia/GOP talking points. Re-evaluate your news sources.

(4,558 posts)We need to get critical thinking courses, the same ones used in Universities today, into high school curriculum as required courses.
When people are trained in identifying the level of validity and integrity of their information sources, weigh said information against opposing views in an objective manner, and identify their own biases combined with removing them from the weight of their acceptance of the biased information, these fake propaganda stories will no longer be able to affect an effect of influence.
The VAST majority of the fake news out there is easily debunked with just a minuscule amount of critical thinking examination.f

(6,916 posts)Liberals tend to be critical thinkers.
GOP billionaire donors want sheeplike voters who fall for propanganda so they can persuade them to vote for cutting billionaires' taxes.
That's why the GOP pushes for their own school textbooks. It's the reason they push homeschooling. And it's the reason they want to destroy public schools. That's why DeVos is in place. That's her mission.
