Late night writer on Trump call for 'equal time' jokes: 'That's not how it works'

Source: The Hill

A writer and producer for NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” fired back at President Trump after Trump suggested he should get “equal time” on TV in comparison to “anti-Trump” jokes.

“That's not how it works. You're not campaigning. You're the president,” Mike DiCenzo tweeted. “Now kindly stop tweeting nonsense and go do your job for once.”

Earlier Saturday, Trump slammed late-night comedians for their “unfunny and repetitive material” and suggested Republicans should receive “equal time” in response.

Trump’s tweets came about an hour after Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” aired a segment accusing late night comedians like Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel of “[taking] a hard turn to the left.”

It would be almost funny if it weren't chilling. Paired with his demand that the Justice Dept. investigate some media outlets (i.e. anything not Fox, InfoWars, or Breitbart) it's chilling. He really doesn't get the idea of a free press/media, at least when it comes to covering him.

and show The Donald smoldering. It would remind people (or enlighten them) that 45 hates Obama and will destroy America out of sheer juvenile spite. Obama was so cool, he just authorized the Navy Seals to get Bin Laden and was able to attend the dinner and laugh and have a good time.

In a sincerely spontaneous manner? Me neither. He seems to be devoid of a sense of humor, which could provide some insight into his mental state. Attempts at humor on Trump's part are almost always in the form of sarcastic barbs and tweets directed at his enemies.

He even attempted to go "serious", which backfired when listeners expected him to be funny, which is a tall order when the subject matter is strident right-wing talking points.

They can't laugh at themselves and there's not much humor in degrading and abusing the least among us. In the 60s there was a term for what the Republicans see as comedy, Sick humor. Republicans are depressed and want company.

We know that he's seen Bill Maher since he sued him - over his orangutan joke. And even Johnny Carson made jokes about whoever was POTUS at the time - that's what they do. Another great quality of Trump - no sense of humor.

I think there would be real benefit to the country. Trump's thin skin would have had real benefit. Fox news would be in real trouble. Of course, Trump still wouldn't get equal time for comedians' banter, so he probably would not be for it.

I'm not sure why, but it seems to be the case. I do know that the best comedy is a parody of reality. The right wing alternative universe has deviated from reality to the extent that it relies heavily on a strident propaganda message, which is about as un-funny as it gets.

No ability to walk in another's shoes. There has to be some truth in comedy, as you say, and all they've got is meanness--some of it clever, maybe--but still just mean. So, yeah, unfunny.

Clearly he hasn't thought this through from his own Party's perspective. The Reagan administration squashed it because Republicans are nuts and their policies are crazy, and the Fairness Doctrine made them look even worse when Democrats shined bright lights under their rocks and exposed them for what they really are.

Trump probably thinks he can single out certain media groups and broadcast channels to force them to give him “equal time” to counter “anti-Trump” news. Would the same thing also apply to the news organizations that support him, airing the counter opinions of Dems and liberal speakers, comedians, entertainers, etc., or will they get an exemption?

Trump has all of Fox News at his beck and call and they will give him all the time he wants to makes his case. They couldn't withstand any “equal time” given the opposition that would expose all their lies and propaganda.
