Democrats Biggest Donor Demands Candidates Pledge to Impeach Trump

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by muriel_volestrangler (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: New York Magazine / Daily Intelligencer

Tom Steyer was the single biggest liberal donor in America’s last two federal elections. In 2016 alone, the billionaire investor plowed more than $91 million into the coffers of Democratic candidates — often on the condition that said candidates were willing to pledge their support for an ambitious agenda to combat climate change.

But Democrats who want Steyer’s money in 2018 will need to promise to take radical action against a very different threat to humanity — the presidency of Donald J. Trump.

In a letter to the Democratic Party’s congressional offices, and House and Senate campaign committees, Steyer argued that Trump presents a “clear and present danger to the republic,” and called on candidates to “make your position clear so that Democratic voters who are under constant attack by this administration, know their elected representatives have the patriotism and political courage to stand up and take action.”

In the letter, which was obtained by the New York Times, Steyer referenced Republican senator Bob Corker’s recent claim that Trump’s advisers have to prevent him from taking destructive actions on a regular basis, and that the president’s impulsiveness could spark an unnecessary world war. Steyer further argued that Trump’s ties to Russia, and his shameless use of the presidency to promote his business interests, would also constitute grounds for removing him from office.

I caution against action before Muller concludes his investigation. If we jump in with insufficient evidence, we risk allowing this sh!t show to continue. Get all the evidence. Get all the perpetrators.

You don't impeach someone because you think their policies are idiotic, or wrong, or if you think the current President is a moron.

Impeachment is for provable crimes. We don't convict people in our courts until they've been judged by their peers to be in violation of the law, and the Presidency is no different.

If Trump colluded with the Russians, then you should have no problem producing real evidence that reflects that collusion. If he enriches himself through the office of the Presidency, or if he's assaulted anyone, then have someone produce some evidence and we can have our impeachment. Whispers, rumors, and innuendo do not cut it.

If we Democrats shackle ourselves to an impeachment platform, what happens if we cannot prove a crime and cannot get him impeached? What will our Republican opponents say about us during the election if we've signed pledges promising impeachment with no impeachment case to be made? We'll look like idiots.

The vast majority of voters are not like members of DU or Free Republic. Those voters can be swayed, and will vote for whoever they like best, and they want things to work smoothly. A candidate that's basically promised to be obstructionist and belligerent may work in NYC or Oregon (or Alabama and South Carolina on the Repub side), but we HAVE to win districts in cities and suburbs and across the midwest, north and south in order to take the House or Reps.

No need to worry if Trump and his group are guilty (including several family members.)

Why worry about how the GOP will behave torwards future Democratic Pesidents? They've already demonstrated the worst behavior against Obama and Bill Clinton. It wasn't even tit-for-tat or let's-get-even. It was let's bury anybody we can, and ask questions later.

Do you not even remember the Kenneth Starr investigation and phony impeachment trial of Bill Clinton? They're going to pull that shit every chance they get.

Just sayin'
