California first state to legally recognize third gender option
Source: The Hill
California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) on Sunday signed new legislation that will allow state residents to choose a gender option other than male or female on official documents.
The legislation, a top priority of civil rights groups, also makes it easier for transgender people to change their gender identification on birth certificates or drivers licenses.
The Gender Recognition Act will eliminate unnecessary stress and anxiety for many Californians, and it exemplifies the leadership role that our state continues to take in LGBTQ civil rights, said state Sen. Toni Atkins (D), who authored the bill.
The measure requires Californias registrar to issue new birth certificates to those born in the state who want to identify as a different gender, or as a third nonbinary option known as intersex.

The gender binary is medically inaccurate and really we need to abolish institutions and norms which force binaries at all into our perception.

(2,191 posts)The bill's legislative analysis doesn't mention it, but I know that after the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland, there was some difficulty in identifying the remains of some of the party guests and artists who lived in the warehouse because they were living/working under identities that didn't match their official identification. News stories brought to light how expensive it was to get official ID changed (for instance, you had to have certain doctor certifications).
