SALT LAKE CITY (AP) A video that appears to show five teenagers shouting a racial slur and expletive while laughing is under investigation by Utah school officials, a school district said Tuesday, and the NAACP has called for harsh punishment.
The 10-second cellphone video was made by Weber High School students as they sat in a car, said Lane Findlay, a spokesman for the school district. He said three of them are cheerleaders. They all appear to be white.
The video shows the teens repeatedly yelling an expletive and slur as they laugh.
They initially recorded themselves shouting a different, nonsensical phrase and uploaded it to an app that played it backward to produce the offensive words, Findlay said.

(160,415 posts)No doubt they learned ever part of that hatred and vulgarity at home.
Thank you for ending the mystery for those of us who wondered what kind of kids they were!

The film Mean Girls isn't even close to how cruel they are. I observed and dealt with it while teaching and chose to stick to Elementary School instead.

(21,038 posts)I will stick to elementary school. Children are not as cruel. And the ones that are you can still shame and make them understand that is wrong.

(2,199 posts)I can clearly remember that when I was a teenager that I never did anything stupid. Ever. That's true!
I don't get why when teenagers do stupid stuff like this, there are people that want their lives to be ruined forever. But, when a teenager murders someone, there are arguments for them not facing the same punishment as adults, because their brains aren't "fully developed".
Maybe it's not the same folks arguing from both sides of the fence, but it seems like they are to me.

(57 posts)Some people might "want their lives to be ruined forever," but those people want to see punishment, not necessarily justice, or maybe they don't care about seizing a teachable moment for promoting behavior change so that teens can learn from their mistakes and go on to be good citizens who engage in civil discourse. But other people, such as those who argue for juveniles not facing the same punishment as adults, might be in favor of using teachable moments in the case of something like the video and in the case of serious crime committed by a juvenile.
