The NFLs position after commissioner Roger Goodells press conference Wednesday was clear: The league wants its players to stand for the national anthem. However, it appears there will be no rule passed to force that issue.
Goodell had a press conference at the NFLs fall meeting that lasted about 20 minutes and almost every question was related to the anthem and player protests. Goodells main talking point was that the NFL also will listen to its players about social issues and wants to be a part of the solution.
Everyone was focused on what will happen at NFL games with the national anthem, which has become the most divisive issue among fans that the league has seen in a long time.
We believe everyone should stand for the anthem, Goodell said. Thats an important part of our policy, its also an important part of our game that we all take great pride in. Its also important for us to honor our flag and our country and we think our fans expect us to do that.

(52,126 posts)The correct answer is that those kneeling quietly are respecting the flag and the anthem every bit as much as those who are standing.
What they're protesting has nothing to do with either the flag or the anthem.
They shouldn't be encouraging players to *stand*, they should simply encourage them to be respectful, and they should make it clear that kneeling *is* respectful.

(27,794 posts)is that this is a group of young men who are often criticized for off-the-field antics, not being mature, how they dress, how they act, you name it. They take a lot of heat as a group for the actions of a few.
Now, they are showing that they really are socially responsible, respectful, non-violent, and willing to use their platform as part of the sports and entertainment industry to bring attention to a real societal issue, and they're getting knocked for that, too.
That's completely unacceptable. And it's textbook deflection away from the real issue they are trying to highlight.
