First Lady fires up supporters in Phila. region

Source: Philly.com

A fired-up crowd of about 3,000 people greeted Michelle Obama at a gymnasium at the University of the Sciences in West Philadelphia Thursday afternoon.

In a 30-minute speech, the president's wife touted her husband's work on healthcare reform, the auto industry bailout, ending the war in Iraq, the economy and a variety of other issues.

"We believe if you work hard, you should not go bankrupt because you get sick," she told the audience, which included many campaign volunteers. Pointing to health care reform, the First Lady drew cheers from the audience when she said, "Our children can stay on our insurance until they are 26 years old."

The rally was the first of three stops for Michelle Obama in the eastern end of a state her husband needs to win in November if he wants to keep his job.

Michelle Obama warns of close presidential race at Bethlehem rally

First Lady Michelle Obama warned of a close presidential race at a campaign stop on behalf of her husband, President Barack Obama, this evening at Moravian College.

"This election could all come down to the last few thousand votes," she said, "particularly, here in this state."
More than 2,000 supporters packed into Archibald Johnston Hall, many showing up outside the event four hours before the first lady arrived.

Obama's speech centered on grassroots campaign efforts and touted landmarks of her husband's years in office, such as health care reform, ending the Iraq War and doubling funding for some student loans.

"Are we going to allow everything we worked so hard for slip away?" she asked the friendly crowd.
