LONDON An academic at a Scottish university confirmed Tuesday he is the professor mentioned in the probe over suspected Russian interference in U.S. politics but claimed the allegations are exaggerated.
According to court papers unsealed Monday, George Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, told federal investigators that a professor in April 2016 promised him dirt on Hillary Clinton compiled by Russians, including thousands of emails. Joseph Mifsud, who joined the faculty of the University of Stirling earlier this year, was not named in the court documents. He confirmed his identity to the Daily Telegraph on Tuesday, stressing that I have a clear conscience.

Mifsud told the Telegraph that he knew nothing about emails containing dirt on Clinton, calling the allegations upsetting and incredible. He also dismissed the disclosure that he introduced Papadopoulos to a female Russian national, calling the allegation a laughingstock.

Mifsud told the Telegraph that he introduced Papadopoulos to the director of a Russian think tank to help him better grasp Russian foreign policy and that he tried to set up meetings with experts on the European Union.

(35,300 posts)A Trump supporter--somebody who because of group and ideological allegiance is not highly regarded as regards truth-telling--makes a claim.
The university professor says the claim is false. However, because of his ethnicity we assume he's lying.
Note that if the professor did do what he was alleged to do, there's no legal jeopardy for him. There's fiscal jeopardy, depending on how his employer views his actions.
For Trumpist, though, by cooperating he probably negotiated a nicer deal. Even if "cooperating" meant juicing up the narrative a bit to suit what he probably assumed the investigators' intentions were.
I'm glad I'm not in charge of issuing the judgment against either, so I have no reason to particularly trust or distrust either. Now, if I were in charge of sitting in judgment, I'd be stressed out.

Many in gitmo are nothing more than innocent cab drivers caught in a nightmare yet we let this monster run free!??
9/11 was a terrible tragedy but in the grand scheme of things it pales to the theft of the 2016 election.
The theft of the election from Hillary proves that WE NO LONNGER LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY!!!
Trump, his colleagues, his conspirators and yes, even the brain dead who voted for tRump are worse than the taliban, worse than al Qaeda, worse even than isis because they tried to kill the United States of America.
Think about that next time you're in line at the grocery, those deplorables with their carts full of processed corn and confined meat want us dead, they are the minority yet they are in charge.
This country is on the fast track to a civil war. The political solution is impeachment and the republicans better wake up fast before we finally decide we've had enough and take to the streets.
