Prosecutor reveals new details in 1983 slaying of black man

GRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) — A black man slain in Georgia 34 years ago was killed because he had been "socializing with a white female," a prosecutor said as he asked a judge to deny bond for two suspects in the recently revived cold case.

Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney Ben Coker revealed new details at a court hearing Wednesday in the 1983 slaying of Timothy Coggins. Two white men were charged with murder last month after authorities reopened the cold case in Spalding County, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Atlanta.

The prosecutor said 23-year-old Coggins died from being dragged behind a pickup truck through the woods. He had been stabbed and suffered cuts on his neck, back and stomach, news outlets reported.

"The murder of Timothy Coggins was due to Coggins socializing with a white female," Coker told the judge.

From left, Bill Moore Sr. and Frankie Gebhardt have been charged with murder in Coggins' death, while Gregory Huffman, Lamar Bunn and his mother, Sandra Bunn, have been charged with obstruction, police say.

GRIFFIN, Georgia (CNN) - Timothy Coggins was stabbed multiple times, likely in the field where hunters found his body in Sunny Side, Georgia, on October 9, 1983, investigators at the time told the local newspaper.

The state crime lab determined that both of Coggins' lungs were punctured, investigator Larry Campbell said, and there were blood stains and tire tracks at the scene. Planes approaching the grass landing strip at Beaverbrook Aerodrome would have flown over his body for about 36 hours before it was found.

"He had been worked over with a knife pretty well," Campbell told the paper. "He had defense wounds where he'd thrown up an arm and so forth."

The October 10, 1983, story in the Griffin Daily News doesn't identify Coggins. Police were asking for the public's help on that front. The newspaper described Coggins as 5-foot-7 inches and in his 20s. There was a small tattoo on his left hand, and he wore blue jeans and a beige sweater. He had a small goatee and "light mustache." Two of his bottom teeth were missing.

If they are sentenced to death, they will be segregated and probably die of natural causes before sentence is served. I say let them rot in general population in prison. They don't deserve any peace.
