Jenna Abrams tweets were beloved, at times, by both the alt-right and the celebrity blogosphere. Now, Congressional investigators have confirmed that her Twitter account was actually run out of St. Petersburg, Russias infamous troll farm.
According to The Daily Beast, the Abrams account that initially became famous after fixing a nude selfie posted by Kim Kardashian was run, along with thousands of others, by the Kremlin-funded Internet Research Agency. The account, which was supposed to be run by an American blogger, soon pivoted to right-wing rhetoric, including a professed belief in segregation.
Before she became a favorite among the reactionary right-wing set, however, Abrams account built up an image of a straight-talking, no-nonsense, viral-tweet-writing young American woman. After building a following with funny takes on pop culture and feminism, she would push divisive views on immigration, segregation and Donald Trump in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election.
Abrams tweets were published everywhere from InfoWars to USA Today and Sputnik to The Washington Post, and high-profile users like Roseanne Barr, Michael McFaul and even, once, Starbucks corporate account responded to her on Twitter. Rather than just being a standalone Twitter account, Abrams also had a personal website, a Gmail account, a Medium account and a GoFundMe page.

(26,286 posts)with eyes wide open and they knew exactly what was going on and they were clearly willing to pay any price if it meant they could secure the Presidency as evidenced by all the heel dragging that Mitch as well as Ryan and the rest of them have done over investigating what Russia did or was doing when it meddled in our elections.

(10,127 posts)Not everything in a cesspool is shit, but its all covered with it.
I can pull up any one of the links you posted, see good, solid news and reporting, but one dip into the commentary or branch to alternate tweets and the whole soup is ruined. 1 degree of separation.
Also, I might suggest that everything doesnt have to be a rush to be first. Id rather it be accurate. And the misinformation that is the pretext to this entire thread spreads at the same speed or first as valid info. It moves at that pace because everyone wants to be the first to share it with others. Regardless of accuracy. In fact, in spite of accuracy.
To each his/her own, I really get it and by no means am I trying to insult. But it is clear, large scale propaganda and misinformation campaigns are being disiminated via Twitter.

(14,490 posts)I wonder how much influence the inflammatory social media posts from right-wingers and Russia affects the tone of discussion on DU. I'm observing a lot of divisive and bitter exchanges here now on other threads.
I don't use social media but I do view many pro-Democrat accounts on my computer. As you have said, when one opens up a Twitter post, many comments are typically very deceptive, outright lies, or in other ways meant to divide.
From what I see, it all seems very unhealthy for those seeking good rational, truthful discourse. It's just one huge head-spin!
