The Latest: Judge may lift Manafort, Gates home confinement
Source: AP
A federal judge says she's inclined to remove from house arrest the former chairman of President Donald Trump's campaign and his business associate.
But U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson did not immediately rule at Monday's court session, saying she needs more financial information from Paul Manafort and Rick Gates.
The men are accused of laundering the profits of foreign consulting work performed on behalf of a Ukrainian political party and concealing those assets from the U.S. government. They have pleaded not guilty.
Jackson says that once she receives the additional financial information she is prepared to lift the home confinement requirement but with certain restrictions, such as a bar on international travel.

(11,141 posts)Judge Amy Berman Jackson at the U.S. District Court in D.C. did not seem willing to relax GPS monitoring, suggesting she still thinks there is a flight risk, but said she would be more open to relaxing home confinement and asked his lawyers to present a package ahead of his Monday morning hearing.

(24,695 posts)Home confinement for someone like Manafort, is not exactly a hardship.

(19,193 posts)but in all fairness he's only been charged with crimes at this point, not convicted. Punishments and hardships will come later, after he's convicted, and he will be convicted!
Just sayin'.

(47,399 posts)Actually, I think the odds are against him at this point. People like him and Trump get cocky and overly confident, then they become careless. It looks like Manafort left breadcrumbs all over the globe!

(28,075 posts)he'd be sitting in jail until trial. Hard to feel sorry for him being confined to the house.

(42,693 posts)People arrested but not yet convicted are, of course, presumed innocent. In most situations, these individuals are considered to be eligible for bail. However, somewhere around one-half of bail-eligible prisoners remain in jail because they lack the resources to make bail.
The issue isn't that Manafort and Gates have the resources to make bail no matter how high it is set, it is that bail is often set at a level that is too high for a person of more modest means to meet.

(23,307 posts)Did he have to relinquish them all? Could he have any more? What's to stop him from leaving the country? I woudn't be surprised to see all or most of these players flee the US in the coming months. They have mother Russia waiting to offer them aid and comfort...in exchange for all they know after having deep security clearances here. This is a nightmare.

Of course, with Manafort's connections (especially Russia) he could have a forged passport already, and could be headed out of the country as soon as the Judge suspends home confinement.

(70,490 posts)But the judge said she might let them out of house arrest in a little bit.
Jackson said she was "inclined" to eventually let both Manafort and Gates out of home confinement, and was even open to allowing them to travel within the United States so they could continue their consulting work, but not overseas. "No international travel is going to be a condition of this release," she said.

(19,193 posts)$10 million bail for Manafort's release. Let's see, forfeit $10 million if I skip (and still have $15 million THAT THEY KNOW OF), or spend the rest of my life in jail, but get my $10 million back. I'll forfeit the $10 million, OF COURSE!

Wouldn't passports have to be handed over to the court? That just seems like common sense ... oh. Never mind!
