A majority of Americans support passing new gun control legislation, according to a new Gallup poll released on Thursday marking the first time a majority of those surveyed has expressed such a view since Gallup started tracking the issue in 2000.
The poll taken in the month between the deadly mass shootings in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 and in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Nov. 5 found that 51 percent of Americans were in favor of increased gun legislation.
The findings show that support has slowly risen since 2012, when 47 percent backed increased legislative action. The year prior saw one of the sharpest increases, rising 12 percentage points from 2011. The 2012 poll, in which support surged, was taken shortly after the Sandy Hook Elementary school mass shooting in which 20 children and six adults were killed.
Support for enforcing existing laws more strictly, meanwhile, has remained largely unchanged over the past five years, ticking up slightly from 46 percent in 2012 to 47 percent in 2017.

(51,585 posts)The elected officials will do what they want anyway. After Las Vegas the news mentioned a governor (I forget the state) whose citizens voted to enforce stricter gun laws and more restrictions but the governor decided to ignore the law and chose to NOT change anything.

(16,926 posts)It is not the majority of Americans that line the pockets of our endowed politicians (yeah, we put them there, but we can't hurt them!) - it's the NRA.
With the way Turtle McConnell has aligned the Supreme Court (denial of PRESIDENT OBAMA'S nomination, Merrick Garland) I wouldn't be surprised if they were to follow their "Citizen's United" ruling and grant the NRA "double extra-secret" voting rights!
(and they all laugh at us as they smoke their cigars and drink the single-malt scotch after they're returned from their broker, being assured that the "correct amount" has been deposited into their "account." )

(4,423 posts)at my job about this issue and they overwhelmingly tell me that criminals are not following existing laws so making more laws won't stop gun violence and won't stop the bad guys from getting guns, then of course I get accused of really wanting a complete ban on guns because according to the gun nuts that is the only logical thing that will work to stop gun violence, so they tell me stop hiding behind some B.S. control measures and actually come out and fight for a gun ban. They have lost their collective minds.
