Some Seniors Worry Over Ryan Selection

Source: Wall Street Journal

MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—The news that Mitt Romney picked Rep. Paul Ryan, who has suggested changing Medicare, as his running mate sparked worries over the weekend among some residents at the Stella Maris retirement community in Miami Beach—concerns that could reverberate among seniors nationwide.

-snip-

With many seniors already decided on a candidate, the real fight will center on the small group whose loyalties remain up for grabs. For those voters, many of them moderates, Mr. Romney's choice of someone from the right wing of the GOP could prove risky.

"I think Romney should have picked someone more middle-of-the-road," said Manny Meland, an 82-year-old independent who lives in Miami Beach. "I don't want [politicians] to rule with ideology. That puts me off."

Mac Williams, a 62-year-old independent who receives Social Security and lives in New Port Richey, north of Tampa, was similarly turned off by Mr. Romney's choice. "Ryan is entirely too extreme," he said. "I think Romney blew his chance of winning over independents."

Let me tell you, as a grandmother, the pride and love you have for your kids is nothing compared to the admiration and adoration you have for your grandkids.

When my children were small I often thought to myself, "my husband and I never really understood what love was until we had these kids." Now I see my grandchild and I think, "now I really, really know what love is."

I think I can speak for a lot if not most grandparents. We love our grandkids and our kids. They are at the center of our lives.

It can't be ignored, though, that the t-party seems to be comprised mostly of 50 and ups who have benefited greatly from the progressive agenda of the previous 100 years but are now sick and tired of all the "leeches" getting the same benefits.

They believe there is government waste and terrible government spending going to "those people". Government spending that benefits them personally is utterly fantastic.

That's why the "tea party" politicians are usually so careful to not explicitly state what they are going to cut. Even the Ryan budget has a magic asterisk to avoid spelling out exactly which government programs get cut to balance out the massive tax cuts.

The teabaggers don't realize that they are "those people". When they discover they are "those people", they fight for their "government handout" with just as much furor.

I fall in the over 55 and we won't change what you have, I also understand this is just another way for the piggy bank robbery by the likes of R/R. These benefits was delivered in my lifetime and I would like to see the future generations to continue to receive them. I am not selfish for only me. I would like to see more efforts in curtailing the fraud and allow those funds to be put to good use. It will not only be the medicare of our 55 and older, it will be more and more away from the 99% and less and less taxes to the 1%.

Because assuming the Bush tax cuts are made permanent and additional tax cuts to the rich are passed, there simply will not be enough money to fund it in its current form. Therefore, under GOP logic, Democrats are destroying it by seeking to preserve it while Republicans are saving it by repealing it and replacing it with private accounts and vouchers.

Get it?

Medicare/SS recipients with an "I've got mine" attitude, there are millions more who are thinking of their own kids and grandkids and the future. My 89-year-old mother won't spend a dime because she wants to leave what she has to her kids. She's a die-hard Dem who understands well the value of those programs which help keep her afloat and which, someday, if we can keep the wolves at bay, will be there for my generation and my daughter's. Romney and Ryan are the stuff of which nightmares are made.

Someone on your staff might have neglected to tell you, there is a state called Florida which has 29 electoral votes that you, basically, can not win without. I live in Florida and can tell you that there are a lot of elderly, retired people who depend on Medicare and Social Security here. Up until now, the polls in FL have showed a dead heat between you and President Obama. You choice of choosing Paul Ryan could very well scare any seniors who were "on the fence" away from voting for you and cost you the electoral votes from this state. See above. Oh, and it's not just those over 65. I understand that the Ryan budget cleverly doesn't touch benefits for anyone 55 and over. I happen to be 54. Try and imagine how I feel. Ok, I am lucky enough to be turning 55 before the election, so I hope this insanity will not change my ability to get traditional Medicare, as I have some serious health concerns. Actually, please disregard this post. What you don't know can't hurt us.

The Ryan budget does, indeed, negatively affect current seniors. Part of that budget contemplates the repeal of "Obamacare." In so doing, the so-called donut hole will reopen, causing seniors with expensive prescriptions to have to spend large amounts of cash.

I'll make it really simple. The whole GOP agenda is about beating the President. They caused the whole financial mess we are now in.

President Obama and the Democrats inherited the fiscal irresponsibility that was created by the GOP after President Clinton left us with a very sound economy.

Ever since President Obama was sworn in the GOP began the anti=Obama ugly rhetoric. They have no progressive agenda.

you will have less money that can be used to help take care of your elderly parents (those that are still alive).

So, it actually WILL affect the folks that are currently 55 and older.

Do the republicans not realize that MANY retired 'children' help support parents that are in their 80s and 90s and even 100s?
