Tesla reveals semi-truck and new sports car

Source: CNN

Tesla revealed an all-new version of its Roadster sports car that can go from a stop to 60 miles an hour in 1.9 seconds, a figure that would make it the fastest-accelerating production car ever.

That was after Tesla unveiled its new semi-truck, which CEO Elon Musk said can go zero-to-60 in five seconds with an empty trailer. That's a figure usually associated with luxury sedans, not big trucks.

With a full load, the truck can still reach that speed in 20 seconds, according to Musk, much faster than any diesel-powered truck.

Only after talking about the truck's speed did Musk mention its range. It can go up to 500 miles with a full load at highway speeds, he said.

With the range advancements. Now that is a shift driving, so there is a built in safety factor. Apparently they can be charged quickly as well. So the driver can recharge while loading or unloading.

The big question is, how do you replace the gas taxes? Higher licensing fees?

Where I live, El Dorado Hills, CA, is the Tesla capital of the world.

Wage, income taxes, road, gas taxes. Even the In&Out will take a hit when hauling goes driverless.

Until they figure out the truck can be driverless on autopilot.

Elon Musk has always dreamed big, and tonight he showed off his biggest reverie yet: the fully electric Tesla Semi. Powered by a massive battery and capable of hauling 80,000 pounds, it can ramble 500 miles between charges. It’ll even drive itself—on the highway, at least.

And Musk promises production will start in 2019.

The big rig, which Musk unveiled at SpaceX’s Hawthorne, California headquarters Thursday night, is just the latest step in his mission to make humanity forget about planet-killing fossil fuels and embrace the gospel of electric power.

That is, of course, if he can convince the trucking industry it’s time for a new way of moving stuff around—and if he can actually make the thing.

I have been to terminals that had no bathroom facilities for drivers, terminals that were designed around 48-foot trailers and never upgraded, terminals that get one truck per week and terminals that have 150 docks. I doubt any of those facilities are going to install chargers just in case someone delivers a load in an electric truck..."why are we responsible for making sure you can get to your next terminal?"

OTOH, this would be a good truck for beer distributors to haul product to stores. It has no tailpipe emissions and you don't have to go out of route to fuel.

and I wouldn't be surprised if truck charging stations are an adaptation of the new supercharger station in Kettleman City for long hauls.
