Rev Jesse Jackson discloses Parkinson's disease diagnosis

Source: Associated Press

SOPHIA TAREEN, Associated Press•November 17, 2017

CHICAGO (AP) — The Rev. Jesse Jackson says he's been seeking outpatient care for two years for Parkinson's disease and plans to "dedicate" himself to physical therapy.

In a Friday letter to supporters, the 76-year-old says family and friends noticed a change in him about three years ago and he could no longer ignore symptoms.

He says the diagnosis isn't a sign to stop working but a "signal" to make "lifestyle changes" to slow progression of the chronic neurological disorder that causes movement difficulties.

The civil rights icon also released a Northwestern Medicine letter saying he was diagnosed in 2015 and has sought outpatient care.

His speech was very slow during the interview and I thought he was ill. Take care Mr. Jackson.

look back after diagnosis and realize they've had some symptom or other for many years. His long time speech "defect" may have been such.

in Chicago. He definitely has a spiritual aura about him. I was working in the kitchen and we chatted as I made him a plate because he had been late for the function being held there. Its one of those special memories for me.

7. I met him when I was at university in the 1980s.

He spoke in front of Lee Chapel to kick off the Mock Convention year when I was a freshman. I was also a student waiter for private university functions so I was able to meet a lot of distinguished visitors while I was there. He was one of the few who took the time to speak to the student wait staff.

He does have a spiritual aura about him. When he spoke to me it felt like we were momentarily the only two people in the world and he was genuinely interested in me and what I had to say. I've met very few people with intensity like that in my life, but he was definitely one of them.

Tom Wolfe, by contrast, was a complete jerk.

Special memories indeed!

He literally shouldered my 19 year old daughter out of the way and ran over her foot with his rolling carry-on at O'Hare Airport. Gave her a dirty look and no apology. That's affected my view of him for a decade.

I've had more than a few in O'Hare.
