Cruzs Democratic challenger officially files for Senate

Source: the hill

By Lisa Hagen - 11/27/17 03:18 PM EST

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) has officially filed to challenge Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in 2018.

O’Rourke, who has served in Congress since 2013, announced in late March that he would take on Cruz next year. It’ll be an uphill battle for O'Rourke, since no Democrat has won a Senate election in Texas since 1988.

“Today’s filing is not only a chance to recommit ourselves to this critical race, but to recommit to running it in the right way: being present, accountable, candid, transparent and powering each step of the way by people not PACs,” O’Rourke said on Monday.

O’Rourke, who filed his candidacy for Senate alongside local and state Democratic leaders, detailed the last eight months since he announced his bid, which included holding 85 public events across Texas and visiting more than 155 counties...............................

If Beto can beat Cruz, he might as well go ahead and run for president in 2020. Even if Beto doesn't win, he's a freaking star. Don't let anyone tell you the Democratic Party does not have awesome young brilliant talent.

Q3 Cruz only outraised him by $300K. Cruz has more cash on hand though.

Disliked republican presidents by Texans in modern history. This is not a "safe R seat."

Neither was 1st term Republican Kenneth Keating's, when Kennedy beat him

Texas's demographics have been getting more diverse over the years and I'm sure a lot of Republicans have soured on Cruz.

Beto might have a chance

And if Cruzs approval is an indicator,30% as a republican is probably worse. Against a charimsmatic democrat with strong grassroots support and funding, Cruz is already starting to smell a bit like burnt toast.

Don't underestimate how much Texans (even Republicans) dislike Ted Cruz.

However, people here seem to dislike voting as well.

A down to earth, straight speaking candidate, even if a Democrat, could take it all away from him. O'Rourke seems to be an excellent opponent. And Cruz's obnoxious, unlikable personality will be O'Rourke's strongest ally.

from the article linked in the OP:

O’Rourke gained an endorsement from the national progressive group Progressive Change Campaign Committee back when he announced in March, and has since enjoyed other support.

Hispanics, overwhelmingly ethnic Mexicans in Texas, love the guy. Beto is a Spanish diminutive for Roberto or Robert.
Cruz simply having a Spanish surname won’t be any help against this guy. They’ll clobber him.
He also played bass in a band with a guy who went on to play with Mars Volta. Millennials will be inclined to vote for him anyway. This little fact could get a lot of them to the polls.
He’s very progressive, kinda like Bernie but thirty years younger. And yeah, he’s got that Irish Kennedy charisma good looks thing going.
It’s tough being a Dem in Texas. I loved it when Wendy ran for governor in 2014, contributed and voted for her, but didn’t really think she had a chance.
But Beto could beat Cruz. Talk about a Blue exclamation point on a big Blue 2018 Wave.
