Paul Manafort Reaches Bail Deal With Mueller

Source: Talking Points Memo

By TIERNEY SNEED Published NOVEMBER 30, 2017 1:16 PM

A month after turning himself in for charges he faces connected to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort reached a bail deal with Mueller’s team, according to court documents filed by Manafort’s lawyers Thursday.

Manafort’s lawyers are now seeking for a federal judge to approve of his release under the conditions laid out in the court filing. Manafort has offered Mueller as bail four of his real estate properties in New York, Virginia, and Floridia, which his lawyers claimed were worth a total of $11.65 million.

Additionally, Manafort and his wife have agreed not to travel internationally, and Manafort would also limit his domestic travel to Florida, Virginia, New York and the District of Columbia. For any additional domestic travel, Manafort would seek the permission of the court, his lawyers said.

A separate court document filed by his lawyers Thursday indicated that Manafort had offered Mueller’s team two people who who can serve as sureties if the value of the real estate drops below the $10 million the government is seeking in bail.

stole a "bait trailer" (police set out an "abandoned" trailer hoping someone would hitch it up and take it, this guy was stupid enough to do it).

It's a felony charge (Grand Theft Auto).

He has to wear an ankle tracker and he can't travel anywhere other than work to home until his trial.

So Manafort is guilty of at least a couple of major felonies (tax fraud, lying on his Foreign Agents Registration forms) and he gets to travel all over the place?

And this doesn't say the ankle bracelet is gone.

Manafort has flipped. Mueller would NEVER let his prey escape without a price.

Of course that IS just his filing.

I imagine Mueller has turned on the higher people in exchange for a lesser charge, one that he doesn't mind serving. But I guess we'll see if he has other passports that he didn't turn over!

have a right to bail unless the crimes they are accused of make them a safety threat.

Of course, not everyone can come up with $10M in assets to use as collateral. If you are poor, you probably can't even afford a $2000 bond.

But in this case, where he is a flight risk, he should be in a fed holding cell, not house arrest. Certainly anyone else would be.

The judge limits him to surface transport only and puts all airports and fields off limits. Plus a tracking bracelet.

Unfortunately, once he boards a private jet, thee is no way to stop him from leaving the country. The military would never get approval to intercept his plane. He is as good as gone the moment the wheels leave the ground.

Any pilot who flies him out of the country will never again fly in U.S. controlled airspace. I suspect pilots are aware of this. Plus, any pilot ignoring orders from the military is taking an enormous chance with life and limb. Mueller knows what he's doing. I hope.

Done all the time. They have standing authority and if contacted by any agency they could stop ship without any further auth.

Not so much shooting down a plane. Moving a military assett like a fighter would take trumps approval. it isn't done, even for drug interdictions.

Once the terms have been violated, the bond securities are forfeited if the prosecution wants to enforce those terms. At least that's the way it works in state courts.
