MAYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) An upstate New York hunter who fatally shot a neighbor he said he mistook for a deer has been charged with manslaughter.
Thomas Jadlowski also was charged in a grand jury indictment Thursday with hunting after hours in the Chautauqua (shuh-TAH'-kwah) County town of Sherman. He was arraigned in Chautauqua County Court, where he pleaded not guilty and bail was set at $50,000.
Rosemary Billquist was killed while walking her dogs behind her home. Authorities say it happened after sunset, when it's illegal to hunt deer. Hundreds of people attended her funeral on Wednesday.
Jadlowski called 911 after firing a shot from his hunting pistol. He hasn't publicly commented on what happened.

(19,233 posts)This won't see a jury IMO, unless his lawyer is total shit. He's screwed royally.

(14,708 posts)who the hell hunts with a pistol?

(19,233 posts)My uncle used to hunt deer with a long-barreled .357 revolver. This guy was using a TC Contender, which is basically a single-shot rifle with a short barrel. Nothing like a Glock or other semi-automatic pistol.

(3,076 posts)... and Chautauqua county has an area where typical rifle cartridges (as used in the TC "pistol", in this incident) are not allowed.

(19,233 posts)Easy to carry unnoticed, long range, accurate.
Throw in the fact the guy shot the victim after dark.

(3,076 posts)... a .357 cal long barrel revolver pistol has a reliable range of 60 yards. Regular pistol cartridges do not have the powder behind them for shots much further than that for big game take downs. That is what I have been trying to point out in this thread and the thread the past week concerning this topic/tragedy. And the fact that the Thompson Center was designed to bend the rules, as you state. It's a free country, you know, but someone has to always see how much they can get away with as to abuse of rules, as shown in the link I offered.
Areas with bow, crossbow, muzzleloader, slug shotgun and pistol rules tend to be densely populated, so the shorter lethal range weapons are allowed. Iowa, municipalities with deer problems, etc... have/had these restrictions for those reasons.

(13,736 posts)Googling "Texas deer hunting handgun" turns up a lot of people writing about & making videos of the practice.
Also it turned up this, in the Texas hunting regulations:
https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/hunting/general-regulations/means-and-methods
Game animals and game birds may be hunted with any legal firearm, except:
white-tailed deer, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and pronghorn antelope may not be hunted with rimfire ammunition of any caliber.
...
It goes on to list more exceptions, but nothing about handguns.

(1,803 posts)Authorities say a pheasant hunter in north-central Iowa was accidentally shot and wounded when a dog stepped on shotgun trigger guard and the gun fired.
. . .
Ken Lonneman, a DNR conservation officer, told CBS News that four hunters and two dogs were looking for the game birds when one of the hunters placed a loaded shotgun on the ground.
It went off when one of the dogs stepped on the trigger guard. Lonneman said it's unclear which dog discharged the shot.

Maybe there needs to be some sort of screening process to obtain a hunting license?

(37,449 posts)he liked being able to run free and use his talent as a retriever. One nice sunny bright day he and I were looking for a couple pheasants, he flushed them as I went to take a shot the place opened up with shotgun pellets going in different directions. A red collared hunting dog and myself end up in the cross-fire, sheer luck kept us from harm. My dog was on the birds so they were rightfully mine..it was then I realized morons haven't got a clue about hunting, and hunting rules. The dog never came out with me again and I stopped getting a license.

Somebody should have taken away his guns before this happened.
