LAKEWOOD, Colorado Presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's first major fundraiser will be closed to the press, in apparent violation of the Romney-Ryan campaign's oft-strained agreement with the reporters who cover the campaign.
Days after assuring reporters that Ryan would follow the same rules as Romney when determining which fundraisers would be open to reporters, the campaign has apparently changed their tune.
As of Tuesday morning, reporters would not be permitted to cover Ryan's fundraiser with billionaire mega-donor Sheldon Adelson at The Venetian in Las Vegas tonight. The campaign's agreement with the press is that events not at private residences are to be open to reporters. The campaign has also kept reporters from events where Romney does not deliver formal remarks.
Ryan aides would not comment on the change on the record. Ryan held a fundraiser in Denver on Monday that was closed press because it was at a private home.

******UPDATE*******
UPDATE: A Romney aide told reporters that the event in Las Vegas is not a fundraiser but a "finance event," and therefore closed to reporters. The aide would not say what the distinction is between the two, declining to say whether the campaign is collecting checks at the event.
"Nobody paid to come to tonight's event," the aide clarified later, saying it is a "Nevada Finance Leadership Event." The aide would not say who would be in attendance or what criteria were used to determine who would be invited.

(7,402 posts)This looks like the same policy Romney used while on his gaffe filled trip overseas. That time it lead to reporters shouting questions a Romney and in Poland a Romney aide shouted an obsenity back at the reporters. Transparency is an obsenity to Romney, apparently.

(9,154 posts)About the time that one learns what the rules are, so one can follow those rules and thrive, the government changes the rules. Then, people have to learn the new rules all over again, as their old knowledge has been obsoleted. Learning new rules most often involves punishment and pain.
I think it must be related to republicans keeping their billionaire buddies in business. But, some democrats also seem to be included. Keep the billionaires billionaires.
Maybe that would be a good slogan:
[div style="font-size:3em;"]Romney/Ryan:[br /]Keeping the billionaires billionaires.

(9,124 posts)When Sheldon Adelson, the casino magnate, needed something done in China, he often turned to his companys chief Beijing representative, a mysterious businessman named Yang Saixin.
Mr. Yang arranged meetings for Mr. Adelson with senior Chinese officials; acted as a frontman on several ambitious projects for Mr. Adelsons company, the Las Vegas Sands Corporation; and intervened on the Sandss behalf with Chinese regulators. Mr. Yang even had his daughter take Mr. Adelsons wife, Miriam, shopping when she was in Beijing.
Adelson and I had a good relationship, Mr. Yang said in a recent interview in Hong Kong. He should thank me.
Mr. Yang joined the Sands in 2007 as the company worked to protect its interests in Macau, where its gambling revenues were mushrooming, and pressed ahead with plans for a resort in mainland China. Boasting of ties to the Peoples Liberation Army and Chinas security apparatus, Mr. Yang was hired for his guanxi, that mixture of relationships and favors that is critical to opening doors in China, according to former executives.
But today, Mr. Yang, along with tens of millions of dollars in payments the Sands made through him in China, is a focus of a wide-ranging federal investigation into potential bribery of foreign officials and other matters in China and Macau, according to people with direct knowledge of the inquiries.
