LePage refuses to say why he is planning special legislative session
Source: Bangor Daily News
AUGUSTA, Maine Gov. Paul LePage is considering a special, pre-election session of the Legislature this fall to propose an initiative that he says will push the envelope and further polarize Democrats against him.
But the governor isnt divulging much about his plans, leading Democrats to criticize him for a lack of transparency and a partisan approach to governing, and leaving members of both parties around the State House wondering exactly what he has in mind.

The confirmation from Bennett came the morning after LePage told a Bangor Republican Committee gathering of his plans to interfere with pre-election campaigning and summon lawmakers back to Augusta in the near future. But first, he said, hes checking with the state attorney generals office to see if what he has in mind and the special session are allowed by the Maines state constitution.
Im just trying to do what other Republican states have done this year, and Ive got to wait before I say too much more about it, LePage said in a recording obtained by Bangor Daily News blogger Mike Tipping. But what Im telling you is this: If we get this done, the state of Maine will be on the right track for the next 10 years. I promise you that.

(41,757 posts)Im going to be honest with all of you here, especially all you incumbents. Im going to interfere with your campaigning because Im going to call a special session in the near future and I cant divulge what it is because the Attorney General is seeing if Im doing it right.
I like to push the envelope, and so weve got it half open and I believe in my mind I believe it can be done. Its not a matter of whether or not we should do it or can do it, its a matter of is our Constitution here in Maine allowing us to do it.

I wish I had come up with the idea, but it was come up with some people on staff brilliant and its being looked at now and I cant wait to call everybody back and get this done.
I think we can get it done in about a day and the Democrats, if you think they hate me now Wow.

Jodi Quintero, Communications Director for the House Democrats, released this statement:
Rep. Cain spoke briefly with the governor this morning regarding his comments on the special session. He indicated to her that he would not be calling the legislature back in for a special session. He would wait until January to propose his idea. He did not disclose what the topic of the special session would have been. Cain was relieved to hear that the governor had backed away from his secret plan. Following the call, Cain said she was pleased to learn that taxpayer dollars would not be used for potential political gain prior to the election, as was implied by the governors initial comments at the GOP fundraiser in Bangor on Tuesday night.
