Twitter tightens its stranglehold on apps with new restrictions

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - In a move to regulate how users access its microblogging service, Twitter announced new restrictions that sternly discouraged independent software developers from creating Twitter apps.

While the move is not expected to immediately affect how current Twitter users across the world access the service, the new rules will likely nudge new users toward Twitter's own apps while slowly ushering the demise of popular third-party clients like Tweetbot.

Twitter, which has been seeking greater control of its platform as it looks to grow into a digital media powerhouse sustained by advertising revenues, has deeply divided Silicon Valley's tech circles with its strategy.

No longer just a 140-character, text messaging service, Twitter believes it can provide more interactive content -- and better serve ads and measure their performance -- if the vast majority of its users use officially sanctioned programs to log into Twitter. But that approach has riled many software developers as well as users, many of whom favor independent clients like Hootsuite, Uber and Tweetbot over Twitter's own products.

Leaning Twitter towards Google style evil.

A Twitter type competitor just made 500 grand based on Twitter's expected actions.

Hopefully, we won't have to contend with another Google/Facebook monopoly of data spying and ad spamming.

......but they really don't hide the fact that they are targeting you with ads. They have been upfront about that. I tolerate it because they make good products.

Google Docs... others have been playing catchup for years.
Gmail... works very well.
GCal... works on all of my devices.
GPlus... actually quite nice but probably won't gain traction.
GVoice... not perfect but who else is even trying this?
GMaps.... set a new standard for online mapping.
Android... Google makes it, but you can use it for whatever you want.
Google self driving car.... awesome, its only acident is when a human was driving it.

....I think I will draw the line at Google Glass. Mainly because you will look like an idiot if the design doesn't get better than the prototype. The prototype actually makes someone who wear a blue tooth device look like they belong on the cover of GQ.

Clarifications are okay in parens (like adding a state to a politican's name for reposting local articles), but this is more of an editorial add.

Since LBN feeds the main DU page as posted, admin prefer that we keep the forum clean on things like this.

Thanks!
