Equifax discovers another 2.4 million customers hit by data breach

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Equifax Inc (EFX.N), a provider of consumer credit scores, on Thursday said it found another 2.4 million U.S. consumers hit by a data breach last year, bringing the total to 147.9 million.

The company said the latest batch of consumers affected had their names and driver’s license information stolen, but noted less information was taken because it did not include home addresses, driver’s license states, dates of issuances, or expiration dates.

On Sept. 8, the company disclosed that personal details of as many as 143 million U.S. consumers were accessed by hackers between mid-May and July. (reut.rs/2t2fDyU)

A month later, Equifax said 2.5 million more customers were affected in what is one of the largest data breaches in the U.S.

In consumer reporting. They make decisions daily based affecting millions of people (& billions of dollars) on the information Equifax provides (as well as Experian & Trans Union). The Repugs in Congress want to make sure we get less consumer protections. Anybody else see a problem here?

I try to stay informed, but I do not recall reading anywhere about anybody at Equifax being at fault for compromising the personal information of 147M consumers. Nobody goes to jail. Nobody gets their pretty little wrist slapped. La Ti Dah.
