Federal offices in DC area closed today
Source: WTOP DC radio, OPM
WTOP just announced this.
Probably because several school systems are shutting down for the windstorm.
I lost power in northern VA for about 30 minutes, no guarantee it won't go out again

(4,033 posts)Wondering if the house will still be here after this weekend. I'm surrounded by huge old oak trees.

(128,490 posts)(under a high wind warning) but there have been no school closures or fed office closures that I am aware of (Philly FEB page is toasted for some reason).
Literally just heard at my post time that a tree just fell down across some Amtrak wires down in D.C. so that will start to impact that system and in general, the whole NE corridor of Amtrak will probably be dicey if available at all today.

(347 posts)I'm on the Potomac River where it joins the Chesapeake Bay -- NOrthumberland County, VA. Power went out here at 0500, still out at almost 0600. Many of us have whole-house generators, so, we have power. Local electric coop already has crews out here.
My weather station shows wind steady at 15 MPH, gusts to 30; forecast says it will get worse. Schools out today.

(45,380 posts)especially in Maryland and the older parts of DC. Power goes out very easily from downed trees. They constantly talk about burying the power lines underground but very little actually happens due to high costs.
Our water mains are also aging and fail often. And we're infested with rats. If I could get a good job out west with more liberals and less traffic, I would pounce on that and leave in a heartbeat.

(8,318 posts)Once for about 45 minutes and once for about 10. We currently have power, and WiFi for that matter but I am at the point I am expecting that is will be intermittent at best.
Add to it thre are multiple trees down between my house and the school which is 16 houses away and any sane person would come to the conclusion it is not safe outside.
The walk with the dog was brisk and cut short due to flying debris.
Be safe if you are going out in the DC area. Its pretty crazy out
