Norways government is planning to ban semi-automatic weapons in the next few years, a Conservative lawmaker told AFP this week.
Peter Frolich, a Conservative member of the Norwegian parliament, said Tuesday that a majority of lawmakers support the proposed ban, which the minority rightwing government pitched last year.
It has become clear that there is a parliamentary majority in favor of the governments proposal, Frolich said. Semi-automatic weapons will, therefore, be banned in Norway.
The ban would come into effect in 2021, ten years after a rightwing extremist killed nearly 69 people in a mass shooting at a youth camp. The shooter, Anders Breivik, also killed eight people that same day by bombing a government building.

(85 posts)that all semi automatic rifles are assault weapons. This is not accurate. It is pretty safe to say that all assault weapons are semi and/or full automatics but all semi auto rifles are not assault weapons. There are numerous rifles and shotguns with semi automatic actions that are legitimate hunting firearms.
Personally, I don't have much use for semi autos - especially in rifles - because I am an accuracy fanatic and bolt action rifles usually have an advantage there. However, I do know a couple of shooters that have to do all their shooting with semi autos because they have physical handicaps that prevent them from using any other type of action.

(2,948 posts)military grade weapons...etc etc etc, for a while now. Or maybe they were just ruski trolls...who knows.
Based on the article being about Norway, it would make sense to write and educate the Norwegian government. Im sure they would appreciate the help.

(17,911 posts)long before Ivan, Vasily and their merry band showed up on the internets. It's simple minded deflection, when the real issue of how many rounds can be fired in a certain length of time is easy to understand and all that really matters.

(17,911 posts)...how many rounds can a weapon send down range in a set amount of time. By that measure, semi-auto are slaughter machines and should be banned, period, end of fucking story. They need to go the way of the tommy gun and the BAR.
Nice how you threw in the "physically handicapped" bit at the end. So typical of your ilk. So we should allow the slaughter of the innocents to continue because someone can't operate a bolt or lever? Ummm, no. Try again, humper.

(19,233 posts)You can own lots of different semi-automatic up there. Assault style rifles even.
Only thing is, max capacity is generally 5 rounds.
Not a lot of gun violence or mass shootings there either.

(17,911 posts)I don't want someone popping off 5 rounds in 2 seconds and then slipping in another mag or stripper clip. No more dick extenders. End of story.

(19,233 posts)Checking online, Canada and Australia appear to have similar rates of gun violence per capital.
With a hundred million semi-automatic firearms in the US, a magazine ban would be easier to pass and enforce, with less pushback from the 50 million gun owners.

(17,911 posts)Great Britain still had the Hungerford massacre with similar law as Canada. Afterwards, they banned semi-auto outright.
As a start, I may agree with you somewhat, but the goal is zero semi-auto, once the humpers either die of disease, natural causes or shoot themselves.

We get it; you know a lot about guns.
Don't care.
The goal is to save lives.

I'm glad they're banning assault weapons.

(85 posts)but I'm a Canadian, a firearms owner for over half a century and I support our Canadian firearms laws with which I'm pretty well acquainted having dealt with them professionally for 15 years.
The purpose of my post was simply to clarify a misconception. It has been my experience that, when you are trying to do things like propose or influence legislation, you are more likely to be taken seriously when you have accurate information and sound like you know what you are talking about. Otherwise you tend to make it easier to be ignored.
But I don't need to waste my time getting shit on for trying to help you out. So don't worry - I won't bother trying to help you again in the future.
