When something is dead, you dont try to bring it back to life. You adapt and find another way.

(14,483 posts)Same words apply to the entire cabal of plutocrats in his cabinet.
This will surely affect the price of boiler tube and other high-grade piping as well as tool steel. Ripples from this huge mistake will be felt throughout our economy.

(7,143 posts)In 2016, we imported $29 billion in furniture and bedding from China alone.
Trivia are fun!

And the furniture and bedding would not have gone up by a penny.
The Chinese are laughing all the way to the bank.
Eta - I do not support trump in any way, shape or form, but the Democratic party is letting the globalists dictate trade policy, starting with bill Clinton.

(7,143 posts)But, for shits and giggles, let's assume it would. How much will roads, bridges, railways and the like be impacted by a 25% tariff on steel?

(50,447 posts)Okay, it's nice that you want to bring back the metals industry. I have four questions for you.
First question: There are a LOT of shuttered steel mills and aluminum smelters. Some of them are closed because of economic considerations; others, because they didn't make metal economically enough to compete. They will have to reopen if you want steel and aluminum to return. What is your administration planning to do to make this possible?
Second question: Most of the steel and aluminum customers buy their materials from overseas. By "customers" I don't mean the people who buy a car or a set of rims, but the companies who make those things. What is your administration planning to do, besides tariffing the shit out of imported metal, to convince metals buyers to purchase domestic metal?
Third question: The answers to the first and second questions involve spending a lot of tax dollars. Are you intending to increase taxes to come up with the money?
And the fourth question: Since you, yourself, are a very major customer for imported steel, why should anyone listen to you?

(3,479 posts)But yeah, let's imperil them by starting a trade war while jacking up prices for everyone.. all huntso we can save US aluminum and steel. That'll end well.
Trump is seriously one of the dumbest public figures I've ever seen. A monumental idiot.
