President Donald Trump promised to rebuild the manufacturing economy that has withered in the United States since the 1980s.
The president tweeted Wednesday morning that he would make America great again by reversing that decline, which he said started under former President George H.W. Bush.
From Bush 1 to present, our Country has lost more than 55,000 factories, 6,000,000 manufacturing jobs and accumulated Trade Deficits of more than 12 Trillion Dollars, Trump tweeted. Last year we had a Trade Deficit of almost 800 Billion Dollars. Bad Policies & Leadership. Must WIN again! #MAGA

(12,578 posts)he was going to screw them over. Why shouldn't they be willing to return to the sweatshop days before unions? They should be grateful to their overlords that they have been given jobs at all. Why people vote against their own interests I'll never understand.
And I keep hearing progressive pundits saying, "during the next four or eight years Trump will reshape America to fit his own ideology," as if it's a foregone conclusion he'll be re-elected in a landslide. I think we should take a page from Sen. McConnell's playbook and start working to make the Donald a one term president.
Or less, if the Mueller investigation continues on its current trajectory.
What has to be emphasized every step of the way is that Donnie Two Scoops' actions are not normal, and should never be treated as such. He should release his taxes, put his assets in a true blind trust (not one where he gets quarterly reports), and follows his constitutional mandate to protect this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. And he should obey all the laws, even the ones that displease Putin, like the one that solidified the sanctions against Russia, which Trump has been sitting unenforced even unto this day.

(12,578 posts)back on the gold standard. Actually, I don't doubt he'd do the last one if it made him personally richer, and he thought it could get him the approval he so desperately wants from rich people.
Next he is going to reinvent the wheel. Hasn't he already taken credit for discovering fire?

(15,276 posts)won't because of technology and automation. It simply does not take as much labor to produce manufactured goods as it did even 30 years ago. Where I live, Shell is building a gigantic ethane cracker complex, but when finished it will only employ 600 people where as 30-40 years ago, it might have employed 1000's. There is plenty of work for skilled tradesmen like electricians, carpenters, plumbers, etc, but permanent, direct manufacturing jobs will be relatively few.

(22,100 posts)to. I've lost all interest in listening to this guy, as well as anything the gop-controlled congress says anymore. Proven quite handily of their inability to govern for the people by the people.
The gop, party of the rich.
Plain and as simple as the nose on your face.

(50,552 posts)The people who manufacture dont want to do it in the US because the laws are much more favorable to robber barons in the Pacific Rim. So...two paths will cause manufacturing to return.
First is to eliminate all wage, environmental and safety laws. I mean, come on: America was great during the era of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. That should bring the manufacturers back in droves.
The other is to set up a network of peoples owned factories, and allow American companies to contract their manufacturing to them. These VEB will pay $8.50 per hour and barracks housing, and youll have to join them for life. It worked great in East Germany.
