Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said in an interview broadcast Sunday that she isnt afraid of tariffs, saying they are one part of trade policy.
I am not afraid of tariffs. I think tariffs are one part of that trade policy. It's not the only part. There are other parts of trade policy, Warren told NBCs Meet the Press.
I want to see a trade policy that puts American workers first, puts American small businesses first, puts American consumers first. Warren during the interview with NBC host Chuck Todd noted she has long been critical of U.S. trade policy.

I think that our trade deals have been negotiated for a very, very long time now to benefit large, multinational corporations, not to benefit American workers, she said.

Warren: Trump facing North Korea summit with decimated State Dept.
BY KYLE BALLUCK - 03/11/18 09:00 AM EDT
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said in an interview broadcast early Sunday that she is very worried that North Korean leaders will take advantage of President Trump in an unprecedented summit, pointing to a decimated State Department.
Let's just start with what the Trump administration has done. They're moving toward diplomacy. I think that's a really good move. There is no military-only solution to the problems presented by North Korea, Warren said on NBCs Meet the Press when asked if Trumps decision to accept the invitation to meet with Kim Jong Un gives the North Korean leader and the regime in Pyongyang too much legitimacy.
But these are very complex negotiations, and what I'm concerned about in these negotiations is we have a State Department that's just been decimated. We don't have an ambassador right now to South Korea. We don't have an assistant secretary for this whole region, she added.
And that really matters, because it means you don't have the people who understand the economics, who speak the language, who know the history, in order to kind of have that country to country before the leaders meet," she added.
"I want to see our president succeed, because if he succeeds America succeeds. The world is safer.

Warren on taking DNA test to prove Native American heritage: I know who I am
BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 03/11/18 09:00 AM EDT
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) in an interview broadcast Sunday said she knows who she is when pressed about her claims of Native-American heritage.
She was questioned during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" about an editorial in a Massachusetts newspaper, "Warren must resolve debate on heritage, which said a DNA test would "permanently resolve the issue."
Look, I do know. I know who I am. And never used it for anything. Never got any benefit from it anywhere," Warren said. "But what I did a couple of weeks ago is I went to talk to the leaders of the native tribes across the country, she added.
And I talked about the fact that President Trump can't seem to hear my name without trying to throw a racial slur into it. Can't seem to make it through a ceremony honoring Native American war heroes without trying to make something else out of it.

Tariffs are a very blunt instrument. They need to ground down to scalpels in order to be effective at all, IMO, and even then, there are usually far better approaches.
I will say that IMHO, our open trade policy with places like China has not been managed well. We need more formal agreements with clear consequences, IMO. We've let it get entirely out of hand.

(8,392 posts). . . but tariffs on raw materials like steel and aluminum -- that's sheer madness.
