CREW Requests Further Investigation of Ben Carsons HUD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 28, 2018
WashingtonThe Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Inspector General should open an investigation into the departments abuse of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) process and expand her investigation into potentially undue influence by Secretary Ben Carsons family, according to a request for investigation sent today by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).
According to reports, Carson has expended or attempted to expend funds that exceed the $5,000 congressional allotment for office decoration at the instigation of his wife, Candy Carson. At a time when HUD was suffering from a $10 million budget shortfall, an employee was urged to exceed the $5,000 spending limit congressionally appropriated for any redecoration and to find money for Mrs. Carson. Secretary Carson also purportedly spent $31,000 in late 2017 for a new custom dining room set for his office suite.
On February 14th, CREW called on the HUD IG to launch a full investigation into Carsons apparent violation of his ethics obligations by knowingly allowing his family to use his public office for private gain.
At a time when services for the poor and homeless may be curtailed by budget cuts, it appears that the Carson family is inappropriately spending a great deal of money to make Secretary Carsons office more comfortable, CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder said. This is egregious and should be investigated.

(57,319 posts)What's the deal with Evelyn Sebree? Who is this person? Why was she chosen to provide the dining room set?
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development spends more than $31,000 on new furniture for Secretary Ben Carson's executive dining room.
A former HUD official claims she was demoted for pushing back on efforts to have Carson's office renovated at a cost above the legal maximum of $5,000.

....
The dining room set, which will seat about 10 people comfortably, was ordered on Dec. 21 from a Baltimore, Maryland, company, Sebree and Associates, records show. HUD will pay $31,561 for the set, according to records.
The owner of Sebree and Associates, Evelyn Sebree, immediately referred questions to HUD when contacted by CNBC, without a reporter telling her what the call was about.
Correction: This story has been updated to clarify that the furniture purchased for $31,561 is a dining room set rather than a dining room table.
