Video released of Oklahoma bond agent fatally shooting man

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Prosecutors have released video of the fatal shooting of an Oklahoma man by his bond agent — who was acquitted in the case — that shows the man asking why he was being arrested before he's shot.

A jury found Chasity Carey not guilty Friday of first-degree murder in the Aug. 9 death of Brandon Williams. Jurors were shown the video in court.

Carey called Williams to her Stillwater office planning to revoke his bond and arrest him.

The video shows Carey, her son and Williams talking before Carey closes a door. Williams stands and is told to put his hands behind his back, but refuses and asks "Why?" He then moves out of camera view.

1. The man was fleeing out the window per the article. If he was trying to escape, how could he be

threatening her life. I call BS. This woman should have been convicted of manslaughter at minimum. If she was going to revoke his bail and put him under arrest, why didn't she call the police for assistance. I just don't buy into the vigilante concept.

This has to be some overcharging thing, aye? Not even the gun nuts (not referring to our more civilized and decent pro-2A folks here on DU) seem to think this was a reasonable act on her part.

5. We live in a brutal society.

It is becoming ever more apparent that our gun culture is accepted and "normal." There is no way that man should have been shot and killed. And definitely no way this woman should have been simply let off. She just decided to kill him because he refused to let her cuff him.

All you have to say is you "feared for your life" and you get off scott free. Video or eyewitness account is not strong enough proof for our justice system. Guns and death are fine in the United States of America. It's endorsed as a matter of fact.

I seriously am considering taking my family and leaving the country. Every day I think about it.

13. We have always lived in a brutal society. There are some communities who have no problems with

killing neighbors or supposed loved ones because "s/he deserved it". This woman's peers had already judged her victim as "trash", and had no problems with her (obviously a "law abiding citizen whose job was meaningful in the community" ) taking him out.

What she did was cold blooded, in a fit of pique. He was running, and she had other legal options and could be compensated.
Her act was little different than, say, a drug dealer shooting a fleeing potential buyer when the deal went south.
The drug dealer would be charged with first degree murder, by the way - not just because the death occurred during the commission of a crime.

But since her position in society was obviously superior to her victim - and that of the drug dealer - she walks.

6. Probably a case of a sympathetic DA deliberately overcharging knowing the jury would acquit

That way he can go on teevee explain how he really, truly, no lie wanted her to go to jail but the jury just didn't agree.

7. How could anyone say that was self-defense?

She saw 35k fleeing out the back and that is why she shot him. This is insane. I mean, wtf? It's obvious she had full control of her weapon at all times, and it sounds as if he was shot in the back. Is that accurate?

It shows Carey grabbing a gun from her desk drawer and shooting Williams in the back as he attempts to flee through her office window

During her trial, Carey claimed she shot her client in self-defense after he tried to grab her gun

Some have argued that Carey was "overcharged" and that a manslaughter charge might have been more appropriate. Payne County District Attorney Laura Austin Thomas said she stood by her decision to seek a first-degree murder conviction. A manslaughter charge "was not appropriate at the time of filing," she said in a statement issued Tuesday.

10. I watched the video.

Murder.

The man is off camera when he is shot, but it is very clear she is in no danger, and casually grabs the gun out of her desk and shoots in anger. The son is center camera, and is clearly not fearing for his or his mother's life when the mom grabs the gun. You can also see the son almost try to stop her, says something to her, then puts his hand over his mouth in shock. The son clearly knows his mom killed someone in cold blood.

I cannot believe a jury could not come to the obvious conclusion here. This world is all kinds of fucked up

I cannot believe she got away with that! Her son knew she fucked up!!

Basically if you’re perceived by a jury as the good guy/gal with a gun in American you can kill anyone you want!! And it is a slam dunk when the person being shot is known to the jury to be a criminal!!
