MIAMI — Led by the congressman who represents Parkland and a neighboring mayor, a new Florida political committee called Ban Assault Weapons Now is advocating for a state constitutional amendment to halt the sale of tactical semiautomatic rifles.

The committee has a dual purpose: support a proposed 2018 constitutional amendment under consideration by the state’s Constitution Revision Commission or, if the amendment is rejected by the commission, draft a new proposal for the 2020 ballot.

“I would love to get the chance to get this done as soon as possible,” said Rep. Ted Deutch, a South Florida Democrat who stepped into the gun debate’s national spotlight after the deadly Feb. 14 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in his district in Parkland. He’s leading the effort with Coral Springs Mayor Walter “Skip” Campbell.

The nascent effort picks up where Democrats fell short in the waning days of the state legislative session, when the response to the shooting dominated lawmakers’ attention. The Republican majority passed a law with unprecedented gun control —but not a ban on assault-style guns advocated by the minority party.

2. This needs to be more inclusive and (1) include entire country and (2)

put or place limits on guns via Amendment 2. Have a two-tier system, based upon geographical boundaries, e.g., major urban areas w/ drugs and lots of violence versa the rural and / or suburban areas.

Perhaps revisionist language to Amendment 2 should have (a) gun courts (b) more severe penalties for using guns in crimes (c) more gun buybacks (d) longer wait periods (e) this is no longer a 'state rights issue', since guns can be purchased in one locality and moved/transported very easily over the border to another state, federal rules need to apply (e) track all gun crimes (NRA or congress or both prevented a thorough tracking of gun crimes, strange isn't it? You would think our police and / or FBI department would need this information, but Congress prevented (f) Tax all bullets and guns heavily to pay for crime fighting tools etc. (there's nothing in the amendment to prevent this, liquor and legal pot are taxed very heavily (g) require gun trigger locks and / or safes on all guns (except perhaps antique guns that don't work) (h) to prevent guns from being left in vehicles that are broken into (and the guns are stolen as part of the crime), have a $500 penalty imposed on the owner (for not taking adequate measures to secure the weapon), and also have an automatic penalty imposed on the criminal tacked on (1 year prison or workhouse or penalty, or both) (i) better evaluation(s) for gun ownership, including those done on the private market, so if someone claims that they got the gun in a private exchange, they need to have certification of their ability to own a firearm (not just that particular firearm, but all firearms)...and so forth, etc.


Just a few tips. And by the way, none of these above items would prevent me from owning my gun or take away my gun(s).

Enough is enough. I'm sure that these kids marching today can come up w/ more. I don't think that the founders of our country ever envisioned such a mess or the vast number of guns out there. Don't rule out having guns, but why is it that guns are in the constitution and deadly viruses, knives, and the like aren't? The gun lobby obviously was working in the past pushing to get this into the constitution as one of its amendments.

And you can ban but the govt then has to buy back all existing weapons of that type.

As are ones in .243, .257, .264, .270, etc.....
