Hawking, an Oxford-born cosmologist, was behind groundbreaking discoveries about black holes and general relativity and was regarded one of the most prominent intellectuals of his era.
In 1963, he was diagnosed with ALS, which eventually paralyzed him. He was still able to communicate using a computer that generated speech.
In recent years, he was an outspoken critic of President Trump, calling him out for his rhetoric on the campaign trail and for his environmental policies.

(19,192 posts)Those were such wonderful days!
What do you think the chances are for Trump saying anything nice about Hawking? Less than zero? He'd probably make fun of the disabling disease Hawking lived with for so many, many years.
Trump isn't aware of anything going on in the universe past the tip of his nose. Hawking.....a mental giant. Trump.....a total zero.

(7,596 posts)He was a cosmologist who studied the universe, which obviously consists of stars. It was a classy comment relating to his profession rather than an afterlife.

(33,313 posts)Every thought Hawking had is travelling amongst the stars. Just need a detector to record them.
Now, get busy and make a craft to catch up with the earliest ones. Once you've retrieved all of them -- from yesterday on back -- you can rebuild Mr. Hawking in a new brain. You'll need to make sure that new brain operates like the old one...

Ta-da! Afterlife.
Stephen Hawking kept that wonderful geek hacker's sense of humor to the end -- went out on Pi Day.
(Note he arrived in '42 -- significant number to Hitchhikers -- just so he could teach us about life, the universe, and everything).

(7,220 posts)Probably for the best...if tRump ever saw Hawking, he'd probably have just mocked his disability
...especially since Hawking once called tRump a "demagogue". Again, he probably doesn't know what that means (or worse, does know, and is pleased).
