UPDATED: Cynthia Nixon to challenge Andrew Cuomo in New York

Last edited Mon Mar 19, 2018, 04:06 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Washington Post

Actress and activist Cynthia Nixon is running for governor of New York, challenging Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) from the left in this years Democratic primary.

Something has to change, Nixon says in the campaigns launch video. We want our government to work again, on health care, mass incarceration and fixing our broken subway. We are sick of politicians who care more about power than they do about us.

Nixon, 51, has never sought office before but has become increasingly involved in liberal politics, especially on issues such as public school funding. She was an early endorser and surrogate for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, and has spoken at fundraisers for Planned Parenthood, speaking out on the groups behalf when Republicans have attempted to cut off its federal funding. If elected, she would be the first female governor of New York and the first openly gay governor of any state.

Cuomo, who is seeking a third term this year, has mocked the idea of a Nixon primary challenge since it was rumored last month. Asked by reporters this month why she might run against him, Cuomo joked that she was put up to it by his enemies.

In a Today show interview last year, Nixon said she had been encouraged to run.

The gap in our richest schools and our poorest schools under Governor Cuomo is wider than its been before, said Nixon, a mother of three children who have attended New York public schools. And thats got to stop.

...but goddamn do I hate Cuomo. My biggest fear is he takes a leadership role on the national stage.

It's really depressing to me since his father was one of the reasons I became a Democrat in the 80's. He wasn't perfect but he was a true Democrat and I believed he always had the best interests of the people at heart.

Andrew Cuomo is a self-serving blowhard who gives the impression that his entire stable of positions would be completely different if he lived anywhere else and politics required it.

In NYC, she has been deeply involved for a long time in local school board, and is an LGBT activist. And, she has a good education.

So, should she be NY's Gov? Probably not -- someone like Hillary would be better, but she isn't an uneducated rank amateur, either.

I'm not a NY resident, otherwise I'd vote for her in the primary against Cuomo, experience or not.

He made a huge debt and Gov Brown has spent his time undoing what Arnold did. Experience does matter sometimes.

I have issues with Cuomo but so far he's not done too badly. I would prefer he runs for a 3rd term.

and doesn't run as Independent if she loses the primary.

Bad enough Diane Neal is running as a (left-leaning) independent for congress, guaranteed to pull votes away from the Dem candidate in NY 19th district.

by trying to win a high office? What’s wrong with running for a district position first? You know, get some experience.

I’m sure Ms Nixon is happy that most people have forgotten her early acting role in “Amadeus.” Imagine if she had played Miranda in such an amateurish way? Politics should be handled the same way.

Citizens United makes it very easy for a handful of rich Republican donors to finance lots of these.

Expect to see book deals, acting roles and a sorts of non cash favors handed out in exchange for these left wing candidacies, too.
