A gunman is believed to have killed at least two people during a hostage-taking at a supermarket in Trèbes, southern France.

An operation involving elite police is continuing at the Super U shop, where others were wounded.

Reports say the gunman, who remains in the supermarket, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Earlier, a policeman was shot and wounded while jogging with colleagues in Carcassonne, a 15-minute drive away.

And this one was acting alone, so there probably isn't some Syrian-trained cell operating here. Sounds like just some lonely whacko who spent his youth wondering why French girls didn't want to cover their faces, wear tents and come with him to chastely praise his own version of that invisible friend in the sky.

Armed police have shot a suspect who took hostages at a supermarket in the southern France town of Trèbes.

The gunman, who is reported to have killed three people, is now dead, sources say.

Reports say the gunman, believed to be Moroccan, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

The suspect was said to be heavily armed and demanding the release of Salah Abdeslam, the most important surviving suspect in the 13 November 2015 attacks in Paris, which killed 130 people.

A police officer who swapped himself for a hostage in a supermarket siege is fighting for his life in hospital, French President Emmanuel Macron says.
...
Interior Minister Gérard Collomb told reporters that police officers managed to get some people out, but that the gunman held one woman back as a human shield.

It was at this point, he said, that the 45-year-old gendarme volunteered to swap himself for her - and left his mobile phone on a table with an open line so police could monitor the situation.

When police heard gunshots, a tactical team stormed the supermarket. The gunman was killed but Arnaud Beltrame was seriously injured.

You just have to live with the fact that these guys are everywhere and one can strike at any time.

Life can't stop because of that, and the cops can't monitor everyone who posts radical shit on the internet anymore than the FBI or the Secret Service can monitor everyone who threatens to blow up Hillary or the Obamas just because someone on Fox Noise hinted it would be a great idea.

A French police officer who swapped himself for a hostage in a supermarket siege on Friday has died, officials say.

Lt-Col Arnaud Beltrame, 45, "fell as a hero" and showed "exceptional courage", French President Emmanuel Macron said.
...
Announcing the police officer's death on Twitter, Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said: "He died for his country. France will never forget his heroism, his bravery, his sacrifice."
...
One person - believed to be Lakdim's partner - has been arrested in connection with the shootings.

That makes 4 he killed - the passenger of the car he hijacked, 2 when he entered the supermarket, and the police officer.
