WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) - President Donald Trump is telling advisers he wants an early exit of U.S. troops from Syria, two senior administration officials said on Friday, a stance that may put him at odds with many top U.S. officials.
Trump is spending Easter weekend at his Palm Beach, Florida, estate. During a speech in Richfield, Ohio on Thursday, he revealed his desire to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria and turn over security to regional countries.
He said that based on allied victories against Islamic State militants, Well be coming out of Syria, like, very soon.
Let the other people take care of it now. Very soon, very soon, were coming out, Trump said. Were going to get back to our country, where we belong, where we want to be.

to discuss any military plans because he did not want enemies knowing what was going to happen (I am sure there is a tweet somewhere for this!!)

(35,296 posts)It's about selling out the Kurds in Manbij and letting Turkey go in.
Presumably to gain Turkey's good will versus Russia. But the result will be "I kept my promise and brought the troops home" while letting the Turks continue the genocide they started centuries ago and which continued with little problem under every president in my lifetime.
The net effect might be to let the Iranians have a fairly clear shot from Teheran to the Mediterranean; this wouldn't be a good thing, letting such a hateful, supremacist government achieve that goal in the area.
At the same time I look forward to seeing the whiplash this will induce among those who have been all "US troops out of Syria!" not so much since 2015 but since January 2017 and increasingly since last fall.
Still think aiding and abetting the uprising in 2011-12 was a bad thing, but now that we're there we need to do more to achieve some kind of justice for the Kurds. Even if it would unravel the Iran deal. I have yet to have Trump's opinion push my views one way or the other, but others do.

(19,972 posts)Drumpfuck just uses people to get what he wants and then abandons them. Not a real "ally."
The U.S. allied with Kurds to knock out ISIS in Syria and now Drumpfuck wants to pull out U.S. troops just as the genocidal Erdogan wants to wipe out those "allies," calling them "terrorists." Richard Engel's show on MSNBC now covers it well.

Like Bush Trump lost the popular vote, like Bush Trumps reelection is considered unlikely.
Starting two failed, illegal wars got Bush reelected, Trump knows doing the same is his only hope; the American people wont vote a president out of office in wartime.

(4 posts)Why is picking winners and losers in Syria our job? Had we stayed out of it there would be no problem right now.
In the runup to Iraq, we kept hearing from the GOP how we just HAD TO depose Saddam. We just HAD TO. It got us ISIS.
We meddled in Iran and got the Mullahs for the trouble.
For the first time, Trump has bungled his way into a sound policy: Leave well enough alone. Assad's an asshole but let's be honest he kept the crazier assholes in line. Everything we have ever done in the Middle East has bitten us right on the ass.
The people of the Middle East want us out of their business. As far as I'm concerned, we should give them what they want but make it clear that whatever happens next, be it Russia, China, some natural disaster, or civil war caused by the government being run by assholes, is totally on them.
