CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ is the third sanctuary church in Northeast Ohio, shielding a married father of four from deportation to Guatemala.
The Tremont church is housing Eulogio Hernandez Box, who has lived in central Ohio for nearly 20 years. He was reported after a traffic stop. His children are citizens, and he has no criminal background.
Immigration generally doesn't pursue cases in places of worship. Across the country, more churches are opening their doors as a place of safety for undocumented immigrants as a result of an immigration crackdown under President Donald Trump.
"Our Christian faith compels us to love our neighbors and ourselves, and the Good Samaritan parable used by Jesus to illuminate that challenges the modern notion of a neighbor as one born within a shared border and region," Rev. Kelly Burd, pastor for the church, said in a news release.

(2,735 posts)He executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing. So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. Deuteronomy 10:18-19 (New American Standard Bible)
Love the United Church of Christ! They've been on the forefront of peace and justice work and practice true obedience to what biblical scripture actually says, instead of what the Christian Taliban claim it says.

Although, any church that claims to be implementing Christ's teachings should be a sanctuary church, so the real headline should be "Majority of Churches Commit Massive Fraud Claiming to be Christian."

(221 posts)The Congregational Christian Church and the Evangelical Reformed Church merged to become the UCC in 1957. Some Congregationsl churches chose not to merge and stayed independent. Our church had one of the first woman ministers in the 1960s. They are considered a mainline church and have always been liberal.
