Hartford Re-Entry Center To Open At City Hall This Summer

Source: Hartford Courant

Hartford’s welcome center for newly released prisoners, a project that social service leaders have been edging toward for years, will open this summer in a city hall annex.

A cluster of offices at the back of the historic building will be transformed into a hub that connects ex-cons with housing, substance abuse programs and job training. It will also steer them to groups providing clothing and food.

Plans for the center were announced in January without a location or a timetable attached. Organizers are now aiming for an early July opening.

“We know that as soon as folks are released, those first few days are critical,” said Sue Gunderman, Hartford’s interim director of re-entry services. “And if they don’t have a place to live, if they don’t have identification or a job and no family support, they’re more likely to re-offend.”

I don't know why we don't have more programs like this for prisoners re-entering society and the workforce.

Hopefully this will drastically reduce recidivism

This is what should be done. Granted, not all will be responsive to it but if you can capture a good percent to go on with life without reverting so they can become a taxpayer vs a taxpayer's burden, then it is a win-win!

And George - there are some programs like this that have gone on for decades but they are mostly religious-based, and more is needed.
