Kanye West under fire after saying slavery was a choice

Source: CBS News

Kanye West is under fire for comments he made about slavery during a sit-down with TMZ on Tuesday. During the interview, the 40-year-old rapper touched on his love for President Trump, his recent tweets, and one point said slavery "sounds like a choice."

"When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice. Like, you were there for 400 years and it's all of you all? You know, it's like we're mentally in prison. I like the word prison 'cause slavery goes too -- too direct to the idea of blacks," he said in the interview. "So prison is something that unites us as one race, blacks and whites being one race. We're the human race."

Tanisha Ford, associate professor of Africana studies and history at University of Delaware, joined CBSN on Tuesday to discuss the impact of his remarks.

"Those comments show how completely out of touch Kanye is at this moment in time, and I think they would have his mother Donda West, a former college professor, enraged," Ford said.

There's more further into the article..... After the interview Kanye asked the TMZ newsroom if he was 'thinking free' and TMZ reporter Van Lathan told him it sounded more like the absence of thought.

maybe it's a cover for 'can't', which may be a disability related, but not reading is not an excuse for what saying what he's saying - that's something you get from listening to talk radio

Anyone who can possibly think slavery was a choice needs to be enslaved, and then assured it's his choice.

Remember that Kanye is the husband of Kim Kardashian, who has shown him a thing or two about becoming rich and famous by being rich and infamous. Also keep in mind that Kanye has fired his manager and lawyer because they refused to work for him exclusively. That means he has to come up with his own marketing strategy for his forthcoming albums and tour, which he has apparently done by looking at who's dominating the urban record charts.

That honor currently belongs to Tekashi 69, who has managed to chart five singles while serving probation on an underage sex charge, taunting street gangs, publicly humiliating the mother of his child by entertaining groupies, and having a concert appearance postponed at a venue where a member of his entourage fired a gun. And on the distaff side, there's Cardi B, who's charted eight singles and a gold album while being engaged, knocked up, and blatantly cheated on by the same guy. But what they -- and Kim, for matter -- really have in common is the hundreds of thousands of fans and detractors alike who eagerly consume their daily drama on social media like mother's milk.

It's been two years (and a hospitalization for a nervous breakdown) since Kanye's last album. But apparently he's ready and willing to get back in the ring, and apparently he doesn't care what people say about him as long as they are saying SOMETHING about him -- and the more controversial, the better, since that apparently translates into sales.

Famous for NOTHING but who they slept with on film. And mindless of anything but what gets them more publicity. Now they've ruined KW, who was much more famous than them until he was convinced it was a great business decision to marry Kim

Seems to me like he's been ruined all along. The K's just exacerbated an already existing problem.

to vote for who he pleases, say outrageous comments such as the 'slavery choice' comment, I can not defend him as a man who understands the hurt and pain prejudice, bigotry and racism has caused to minorities as perpetrated by white supremacists, nazis and trump voters. He has caused them, RWers, to rejoice at their AA spokesperson. He and Carson should be friends and have dinner together. Invite Clarence, he might enjoy it, Omarosa also, she should be able to regal all of them with her stories of living with trump.

Is he serious?

Many of them are vapid and self aggrandizing whose opinions are often no more informed than any schlep on the street but feel that their popularity has granted them some sort of mandate to pontificate.

There are some that are informed and I value what they say but many aren't. Case and point.
