Off Duty Officer fires gun inside school

Source: WHMI Radio News

A wrestling meet at Fowlerville High School was disrupted Saturday afternoon when an off-duty police officer accidentally discharged his firearm.

According to Fowlerville Police Chief John Tyler, the incident involved an off-duty Flint officer at about 12:40pm as he stood on the gym floor. The bullet went into the gym floor and there were no injuries from the gunshot, although one person was treated by EMS for a twisted ankle. The meet resumed after about 50 minutes.

Chief Tyler said a report will be referred to the Livingston County Prosecuting Attorney's Office once they complete their investigation. The weapon was the officer's off-duty sidearm, which he was legally licensed to carry. The wrestling meet was not a Fowlerville district event, but instead one organized by a third party

So does that count as “a good guy with a gun”, or “a bad guy with a gun”?

I’m so confused when an accidental discharge of a firearm happens in a school...

The shooter is a cop. So, it should be no surprise he's carrying a gun. Revoke the second amendment and he'll still carry a gun.

This incident may cause him to go through some remedial training.

I don't see a parent mentioned in the article.

walking a beat.

Another town's cop was in a rail-yard at the grain bins and parked his car lights on one end while he went around the other trying to corner what he thought was someone breaking in. When he finally ran back around the other side he thought his cruiser was trying to run him down so he shot his own cruiser with a full clip.

90's made Barney Fife lock academy trained.

Our sheriff was a former bar owner who's only qualification was the required $20,000 bond the law requires of a sheriff. His wife was made the dispatcher for the town's volunteer fire fighters. She drank a bit and in one month managed to sent the fire dept to house fires on farms to quadrants 180 degree the wrong direction in the county.

The town council asked him to attend a meeting and when they brought up the bad fire call-outs and asked what could be done together to stop them before someone died, he stood up, told them he didn't answer to the town for anything and walked out. He made the State Trooper stay on State 9 through town while on duty, he was not allowed to drive anywhere else in town.

His son was his head deputy and he was known to pick up bags dropped in touch and go drops at the town airport, and was said to be the major source of drugs in the county.

He ran for Sheriff a couple of years later.

We had three cops in our town. The chief and two part timers. The chief tried to look like Rod Stieger. The other two kinda dressed like security cops with ball caps. I called them the minimum wage cops though they made $10.hr.

One night one cop was practicing his tailing skills going around a corner rear ended a car. Liquor was involved and the city paid for it and he cooled the drinking for couple of months.

A police chief from Lyons shot his girlfriend and ended up on Most Wanted.

The high school mascot was the PenDragon, which had painted a flame belching big red dragon on an intersection downtown. One night a patron at the tavern on that corner was caught peeing on the dragon.

"What are you doing?" asked the cop.
"Can't you see? " replied the drunk, "I'm putting out a fire."

That story gets better, too. There was no law he could be charged with regarding peeing, and the cop didn't charge public intox, the guy got cut loose the next morning.

There's more. The town spent a couple of grand getting a law against public urination in the books. In the hundred and thirty years the town had been there one one had been anyone arrested for it but now they got a law.

I had a date in a nearby town and I was going around the bend on Rt. 30 about 7 miles above the speed limit.

Red light behind me.

Cop explains how the area is sensitive to speeding violations because someone was killed about a month ago and two more people died in an accident going to the wake.

In Vermont, the cop reads your rights to a trial, and what happens if you don't pay the $50. ticket. And I'm saying to myself, just give me the ....'ing ticket so I can go on my way.

So I kick the tires and put a check in the mail and forgot about it.

Two years later, I get a $50.00 refund in the mail from the State of Vermont.

Seems this guy went out and bought his own radar gun and never had it calibrated and never got authorization to use it.

About four or five of us in '70 were tossing the Frisbee around and sat down to roll a no name cigarette. A ranger drove past saw what we were up to, pulled into the next lot and walked back into the woods and came down behind us and caught us toking with the bag on the ground.

He grabbed it up and told us to follow him back to his car. Loumeyer asked the cop to see the bag of contraband vegetable matter which the cop handed back to Loumeyer. We reached the cruiser at which point he asked for the evidence back. Unfortunately Loumeyer had managed to dump it on the grass. One very disappointed park ranger.

I believe its a coincidence that several weeks later park rangers were armed with handguns and were sworn as peace officers. Didn't stop recreationally smoking in the parks, just quit carrying more reefer than we were going to smoke and rolled it at home.

Akron, Ohio.

"A parent had a revolver in their pocket that discharged somehow and went off in the middle of our wrestling tournament," said Steve Richardson, an official with Michigan USA Wrestling.

The parent happened to be an off-duty officer who was at the school to watch his son wrestle. Police said the gun accidentally discharged somehow and the bullet ended up in the gymnasium floor.
