GOP Bill Approves Funds For Trump's Military Parade

This years National Defense Authorization Act, the Republicans proposed 2019 defense spending bill, greenlights funding for President Donald Trumps long-coveted military parade.
In order to honor American veterans, including American veterans of past wars that the Secretary of Defense determines have not received appropriate recognition, the Secretary may provide such support as the Secretary determines is appropriate for a parade to be carried out in the District of Columbia, the bill reads.
The Secretary would be authorized to expend funds authorized to be appropriated under this Act for the display of small arms and munitions appropriate for customary ceremonial honors and for the participation of military units that perform customary ceremonial duties, it continues. Trump first voiced his desire for a military parade in September 2017, after being wowed by the Bastille Day display in France.
So were actually thinking about Fourth of July, Pennsylvania Avenue, having a really great parade to show our military strength, Trump said at the time.

(128,748 posts)for FY19. It would have to make it through both chambers, unscathed, and be signed into law, to be any "win". It could easily have that language stripped out - particularly since some of the crap that has been suggested would tear up the D.C. streets.
Since this is an election year, chances are there WILL be continuing resolutions to get over the September 30 deadline because they most certainly will be off the month of August to campaign. In the past, they used to try to get the DOD funding through and leave the rest for CRs, but recently, they haven't even been able to do that.

(630 posts)"The Marble Boat (Chinese: 石舫; pinyin: Shí Fǎng), also known as the Boat of Purity and Ease, is a lakeside pavilion on the grounds of the Summer Palace in Beijing, China . . . The Marble Boat is often seen as an ironic commentary on the fact that the money used to restore the Summer Palace largely came from funds originally earmarked for building up a new imperial navy.[2] The controller of the Admiralty, Prince Chun, owed much of his social standing as well as his appointment to Empress Dowager Cixi, who had adopted his eldest son, Zaitian, who was enthroned as the Guangxu Emperor. Because of this, he probably saw no other choice than to condone the embezzlement."

(36,743 posts)Trump does not want to salute the military.
He wants the world to see the military salute him.
Will it be awkward when he refuses POWs a place in his parade?
After all, Dotard does not like soldiers who were captured.

(5,477 posts)Does he have ANY concept at all as to what was being celebrated by that parade?
Here's the deal for you, Donnie - you can have your parade as soon as we finish storming our military prisons and removing YOU from office. That will be a real reason for the nation to celebrate - not having the troops waste all the time and money putting on a parade for you.
(I don't know of any member of the military that actually *liked* getting tasked with parade duty. It cut into the actual work that we were doing, and took time away from training for all the preparation and practice time. It usually cost us some out-of-pocket cash, as well, to get our dress uniforms al spiffed up for the event. To add even more insult to the mix, these things are usually held either on a weekend or a holiday, at those very times that we would have much rather have been enjoying our limited time off with our own families.)
Screw you, TrumpleThinskin... the ONLY good that can come of this would be to make the troops that have to participate dislike you even more than they already do. (Most of us would render a salute with a slightly raise middle finger - not really enough for anyone else to notice, but just enough that we felt we had flipped the bird!)

(6,831 posts)This is BULLSHIT. As a veteran, the notion of this five-deferment, draft-dodging, chickenshit coward demanding a parade is making steam come out of my ears. How much money will be spent on this repulsive spectacle ? $3million ? $5million ? More ?
This is money that would be better spent in financing Veterans health care. There are currently 46,000 vacancies at the VA: doctors, nurses, specialists and technicians. The most requested consult today at the VA is mental health. It takes about 3 months to get a first appointment to see a mental health care specialist as the need is so great. This is insult to injury. We served and now all we want it to get the health care we earned.
Trump, on the other hand, does not deserve a parade. He has done nothing to earn one. Make no mistake, this has nothing to do with honoring veterans and everything to do with this enormous ego. Something else about him that is over-rated.
And the spineless, morally-bankrupt wankers in Congress are going to give him one.
I can only quote Robert O'Neill:
"A military parade is third-world bullshit. We prepare. We deter. We fight. Stop this conversation."
In case the name is unfamiliar to you -- Robert O'Neill, US Navy Seal, the man who shot Osama bin Laden. Thank you for your service, Senior Chief O'Neill. Semper Fortis.

This is just something to feed Trump's ego. When he was president-elect Trump tried to get a military parade for his inauguration, but he didn't have the power to make it happen. Now he does.
The problem -- in addition to the wasted money, manpower and lost training -- is that if he gets this year's parade he'll want another one again next year, only bigger.
He's also going to want an aircraft carrier named after him. (Not kidding.) That's the problem with naming ships after living past presidents, the the carrier George H.W. Bush. It sets a precedent.
Now, if Donnie Two Scoops kicks the bucket before the 2020 elections, I might consider naming this boat after him:
