Source: Charleston Gazette-Mail
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., was declared the winner of his primary against Democratic challenger Paula Jean Swearengin on Tuesday, while several Republicans jousted for the spot opposite Manchin on Novembers general election ballot.
The Associated Press and others called the Democratic primary for Manchin about 50 minutes after polls closed at 7:30 p.m. With 29 percent of precincts reporting, Manchin had more than 69 percent of the vote.
State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey had the lead in the GOP Senate primary. With 28 percent reporting, Morrisey had 34 percent of the vote to 24 percent for U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins and 21 percent for former Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship. Three other GOP candidates lagged behind.

(3,145 posts)Not for Manchin but that Blankenship is in third. He would have been our best chance to keep that seat.

(6,251 posts)He grew up in New Jersey, where he unsuccessfully ran for Congress and worked for a lobbying firm. He moved to the eastern edge of West Virginia, to run for Attorney General, and to let his wife keep her lobbying job in DC, for Cardinal Health, one of the worst of the opioid pill pushing companies. Morrisey reluctantly recused himself from a lawsuit the state had filed against Cardinal Health under the previous AG.
West Virginians hate carpetbaggers. We especially hate people from New Jersey. Don't ask; we just do. And we are disgusted with the Big Pharma companies dumping millions of pills on drugstores in little villages. Morrisey represents all of this things.
I think Manchin has a good shot!

(19,559 posts)If a candidate loses in the primary they can't run as an independent in the general, or so I read in an article earlier. A lot of states have this provision, and I guess WV is one of them?

I suppose Blankenship could try running as a write-in candidate . . . . He announced tonight that, as his parole restrictions end at midnight, he's going on vacation. Either Aruba or Paris. Such a man of the people!
