Trump White House quietly cancels NASA research verifying greenhouse gas cuts

You can't manage what you don't measure. The adage is especially relevant for climate-warming greenhouse gases, which are crucial to manage—and challenging to measure. In recent years, though, satellite and aircraft instruments have begun monitoring carbon dioxide and methane remotely, and NASA's Carbon Monitoring System (CMS), a $10-million-a-year research line, has helped stitch together observations of sources and sinks into high-resolution models of the planet's flows of carbon. Now, President Donald Trump's administration has quietly killed the CMS, Science has learned.

The move jeopardizes plans to verify the national emission cuts agreed to in the Paris climate accords, says Kelly Sims Gallagher, director of Tufts University's Center for International Environment and Resource Policy in Medford, Massachusetts. "If you cannot measure emissions reductions, you cannot be confident that countries are adhering to the agreement," she says. Canceling the CMS "is a grave mistake," she adds.

The White House has mounted a broad attack on climate science, repeatedly proposing cuts to NASA's earth science budget, including the CMS, and cancellations of climate missions such as the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 (OCO-3). Although Congress fended off the budget and mission cuts, a spending deal signed in March made no mention of the CMS. That allowed the administration's move to take effect, says Steve Cole, a NASA spokesperson in Washington, D.C. Cole says existing grants will be allowed to finish up, but no new research will be supported

I have a suggestion (not for you personally, I dont know you) next time the Democratic Party gives us a candidate to run for the WH we DONT hold our nose, attack her or him, etc.

Might actually get them elected if we SUPPORT them

to science since he was inaugurated. He cut all the money and has ordered all of their research dramatically cut or stopped completely. The info that if we do have is prohibited from being released to the public. Now we have to rely on our allies in other countries to share their research with us. The fucking moron needs to be ******** (use your imagination since I don't want a DU warning).

They can consolidate wealth and power for themselves. Greedy assholes.

I do not understand why anyone would choose to destroy the planet. 10 million/year is a blip of the US budget. Hell, his slush fund could pay for it.

debate and compromise. They knew that we would be slow and inefficient, but they also knew that this type of government would not go too far off track. Or so they hoped.

If Trump were even halfway decent as a human being, I would shake my head and work on getting him out in 2020.

Problem is, the guy doesn't have a decent bone in his corrupt, immoral, treasonous, ignorant, semi-literate, stupid body. Not a one.

He is a sociopath who seems bent on petty destruction but it just doesn't make sense. Getting out of the Paris and Iran agreements didn't make any sense. Massive deregulation doesn't make any sense. Censoring the publication of scientific papers doesn't make any sense. Threatening to pull press credentials...well, the guy wants to be a dictator, so that makes sense.

But the way he's going, he'll be the dictator of one of those 'shithole' countries. I guess in a lot of ways, we are one of those countries already. So many people go hungry, bear up day to day under grinding poverty, get nickel and dimed to death.

And Trump JUST DOESN'T CARE. Not at all.

1. a balance of opposing factions in Congress & state legislatures
2. free, honest, transparent elections
3. for the Old Boys Club (ie politicians) to always maintain at least a facade of propriety.

Nothing else matters. Not human health, nor the environment, nor civil rights, nor education -- nothing matters except corporate profits.
