Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson has cut a $30 million check to the House GOP-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund, a massive cash infusion that top Republicans hope will alter the party's electoral outlook six months before Election Day.
The long-sought donation was sealed last week when, according to two senior Republicans, House Speaker Paul Ryan flew to Las Vegas to meet with the billionaire at his Venetian Hotel. Also at the meeting with Adelson was his wife, Miriam; Norm Coleman, the former Minnesota senator who chairs the Republican Jewish Coalition; Corry Bliss, who oversees the super PAC; and Jake Kastan, Ryan's No. 2 political aide. They laid out a case to Adelson about how crucial it is to protect the House. As a federally elected official, Ryan is not permitted to solicit seven-figure political donations. When Ryan (R-Wis.) left the room, Coleman made the ask and secured the $30 million contribution.
CLF did not respond to requests for comment. The contribution will become public later this month in the organization's campaign finance filing.
Coleman said he would not discuss his dealings with Adelson.

(25,241 posts)I've said it over and over again here at DU. We need a 'historic' turnout in Nov 2018 to counteract anything the Repugs will do to retain the House & Senate. We need to have more Americans to vote in Nov 2018 than in any other election ever in the U.S. This GOTV initiative needs to be happening as we speak and probably should have been in motion since Trump took office.
I'm afraid that many Americans will hear of a Blue Wave for Dems and think that they won't have to go vote themselves because it's in the bag for the Dems.
We got to know that the Repugs will throw everything they could at the Dems to retain their power base. So the Dems need to be smarter and work harder to create an 'historic turnout' for the Nov Midterms.
We can't be complacent here. We need to mobilize to counteract the Repugs gerrymandering and voter suppression activities.

(218 posts)Almost 14 MILLION dollars was spent trying to get Sad Sack Saccone into Congress in Western PA.
How'd that work out for the GOP?
Not too well.
Go ahead, Shelly, burn that cash.

(22,110 posts)increase their cost per vote (repugs)...they'll learn the hard way that more money doesn't equate into more votes. Especially this time around. People will do what is right by this country, regardless of what a so called politician says (especially a repug one).

What right does this casino mogul have to a louder voice in the politics of a democracy than me?
