WASHINGTON -- Melania Trump underwent a medical procedure on Monday morning to treat what the White House called a "benign kidney condition" and was reported to be recovering without trouble at a military hospital outside the capital.
"The procedure was successful and there were no complications," the White House said in a statement. "Mrs. Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week. The first lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere."
President Trump spoke with Mrs. Trump on Monday morning before the procedure and later spoke with the doctor after it was over, according to a White House official who asked not to be identified describing the private communications. Mr. Trump left the White House by helicopter on Monday afternoon to fly to Walter Reed to be with the first lady.
"Heading over to Walter Reed Medical Center to see our great First Lady, Melania," Mr. Trump said on Twitter. "Successful procedure, she is in good spirits. Thank you to all of the well-wishers!"

Edit to add WaPo article -
First lady Melania Trump underwent a medical procedure to "treat a benign kidney condition" Monday morning at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and is expected to remain hospitalized for the rest of the week, according to her communications director. "The procedure was successful and there were no complications," according to a statement from Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communications director. "Mrs. Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week. The first lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere."
The statement vaguely described the procedure as "an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition" but offered no additional details about the first lady's condition or treatment. Grisham declined to provide additional information or answer questions about the procedure, saying that the first lady is entitled to privacy.
In embolization, doctors insert a catheter as part of a procedure to purposely block a blood vessel and cut off the blood supply to the affected area. This can be done by sending a coil or a substance down the catheter. The catheter is usually inserted in the femoral artery in the thigh and then threaded through the aorta to the renal artery and then to a smaller blood vessel.
This hospitalization comes as Trump, 48, has taken a higher-profile role in the White House in recent weeks. In late April, she hosted her first state dinner in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, and attended the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush in Houston.

(50,528 posts)Maybe she just needed another reason to get away from him. I heard on the news tonight that she's supposed to be in the hospital for 5 days. Who gets to spend 5 days in a hospital any longer? I've know people who have had cardiac surgery who are shipped out quicker than that.

(20,866 posts)I had an inguinal hernia repair done several years ago.
It was done on an outpatient basis!
I left the hospital wearing bloodied up clothes and they could have cared less!
There is a lot more to this story than meets the eye.
I wonder what the real story is anyway? wtf:

(15,265 posts)said it was likely some kind of tumor that doctors had probably been watching for awhile. He said the procedure cuts off the blood supply so the tumor shrinks.
RayOfHope
(1,829 posts)treatment for it. The mass is called an angiomyolipoma, its a fatty tumor with blood vessels in it. If it gets big enough, there is a good chance of rupture.

(15,265 posts)For reference, my late-octogenarian mom had surgery for a broken hip and was discharged less than 48 hrs later.

(128,441 posts)The hospitals will try to kick you out in 3 days after major surgery - 4 if you scream about needing pain meds. Babies (including c-sections) are now 1 - 2 day events. And I know my mom used to say that they kept mothers in the hospital for 7 - 14 days after a baby.
But see when they do this, inevitably some people end up back in the hospital again.
DeminPennswoods
(15,265 posts)her, back less than 24 hrs later and never got the rehab she should have all because of being discharged too soon.

(15,532 posts)My daughter had a c-section two years ago and she was out of the hospital in 2 days and that's major surgery in addition to having a baby to care for. When I had my two babies in the 70's I stayed 4 days one time and 5 the next and I didn't have c-sections. Your every need was taken care of. I couldn't imagine being sent home after a c-section.
Maybe Melania has no stamina.
