U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta captures GOP nomination for U.S. Senate [in PA]

Source: The Patriot-News (Harrisburg, PA)

U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta easily fended off a challenge from state Rep. Jim Christiana in Tuesday's primary to capture the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate.

Barletta, who has served in Congress since 2011 will now face Pennsylvania's senior senator, two-term Democratic incumbent Bob Casey in November. Casey, 58, of Scranton, was unopposed in the primary.

Barletta, the 62-year-old former mayor of Hazleton, came into the race as the clear favorite, having secured endorsements from President Trump and the state Republican party.

Wikipedia on Barletta's time as mayor of Hazleton, PA:

In 2006, Barletta made headlines for his efforts opposing illegal immigration in Hazleton vowing to make the city “one of the toughest places in the United States” for illegal immigrants.[7] Barletta introduced and the city council approved the Illegal Immigration Relief Act.[8] The ordinance allowed the city to deny a business permit to employers who hired illegal immigrants and gave the city authority to fine landlords up to $1,000 for leasing to illegal immigrants.[7][9] The act also made English the official language of Hazleton, prohibiting city employees from translating documents into any language without official authorization.[10] In response, the ACLU and Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund sued in Federal District Court to block the ordinance.[10] In July 2007, District Court Judge James M. Munley ruled that the act was unconstitutional for interfering with Federal immigration laws and violating the due process of individuals, employers and landlords.[7] The ruling was upheld on appeal to the United States Court of Appeals on September 9, 2010.[11] In a public statement shortly after the decision, Barletta vowed to appeal.[12]

If you do not want that policy on a national level, GOTV for Casey.

I'd certainly vote for Bob Casey if I still lived in luzerne county, but I think he is the favorite over barletta in november (& my vote wouldn't matter really).
I think barletta was helped by gerrymandering, and with the pennsy court ordered redistricting this year (to make it fairer, reverse the pro republican gerrymander), should tighten things up so that a 55 - 45 democrat popular vote in some states won't end up with a 60% republican state house.
We should all know by now, the republican party cheats, its platform condones cheating, its election committees condone cheating, its leading politicians condone cheating, so as to make themselves more powerful than they ever should be.
The GOP platform cheated by gerrymandering pennsy districts starting this century. Republicans nationwide subtly try to suppress minority votes using voter ID and intimidation tactics.
Trump, cheater in chief, cheated conned lied & defrauded during his election campaign. If a high school football team wins but cheated, they didn't win legitimately, they cheated - the patriots got fined for deflating footballs. Trump lost by 10 million votes to his 4 main opponents, all of which could have formed a coalition against trump and his policies, while not one of them would've joined trump to oppose any of the 4. Any minor mandate is AGAINST trump & his policies, yet repubs go on tv & speak like the 'american people voted to make cuddly wuddly donald their president' and we should all prostrate ourselves in front of this national disgrace.
Gonna stop now, gotta go puke.

Oh, one last thing before I go, I voted (as a pocono bathtub) for kanjorski (polack like me), kanjo, & I remember people blamed it in part on the gerrymander.

Republican Lou Barletta has represented the 11th/9th district since 2011, the first Republican to do so in almost 30 years.
From 2003 to 2013 the district included Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton and most of the Poconos. With a strong base in areas of industry and ethnic groups, it was once considered a very safe Democratic seat but has become more competitive in recent years. Former longtime Democratic incumbent Paul Kanjorski faced his closest contest ever in 2008, narrowly defeating Lou Barletta, the Republican mayor of Hazleton, 138,849 to 129,358.[3] In 2010, Kanjorski fell victim to a GOP and anti-incumbent wave and was unseated by Barletta in a 45%–55% vote.[4]
Redistricting significantly altered the 11th. It lost Scranton and Wilkes-Barre to the 17th District. To make up for the loss in population, the 11th was pushed into more rural and Republican-leaning territory to the north and south. It then stretched from the Poconos all the way to the suburbs of Harrisburg.

against Casey, imho. Christiana's been in the state house for 10 years and chose not to run again to make a run for US Senate. Christiana's conservative, but not crazy and does have some "good gov't" credentials that would make him appealing to general election voters.

Now with Barletta and Scott Wagner (GOP gov candidate), Dems, Independents and non-Fox News cultists will be reminded from now until Nov of everything they hate about Trump.
