UPDATE: MSU reaches settlement with Nassar survivors for $500M

EAST LANSING, Mich (WLNS) - Michigan State University has settled hundreds of lawsuits filed against it by the survivors of Larry Nassar's sexual assaults.

Sources connected to the survivors tell 6 News that the announcement will come from the university today.

6 News has confirmed reports that it is expected that the settlement will cost the school at least $500 million.

$425 million will go to survivors who currently have claims against the university. The remaining $75 million will be placed into a fund and used for future claims.

MSU special counsel Robert Young released a statement on the settlement:

Considering they knew, they covered it up, and even after it all became public they tried to slander the victims during the sentencing hearings...

foot this bill. At a time when colleges and universities need support.

Male privilege comes at a very high price.

While they deserve to be compensated, i'm a little conflicted at how many people could have gotten their degree with that money instead.

Make people feel the cost and this stuff won't be allowed to go on....I say the same with cops...make the civil settlements come from police pensions and we would see the bad stuff they do come to an end.

Now there's a great idea. The vast majority of those people probably didn't even interact with Nassar. Why should they lose their pensions because he was a child molesting scumbag? If they're guilty of covering up for him, then nail them to the wall as individuals. Collective punishment is not justice.

The university was found to be at fault as well as Nassar. Not as an individual, but as an organization, and the settlement will be paid by tuition and state aid.

University is responsible for paying, unless the legislature moves to put it on the taxpayers, and that won't happen, IMO.
