DeVos refuses to visit public schools on NYC trip - Blasts bans on taxpayer funds for religious education

By DAVID BADASH MAY 18, 20189:41 AM

Betsy DeVos has concluded her two-day visit to New York City, during which she refused to visit a single public school, although she did attend two private, Orthodox Jewish religious schools. The Education Secretary also delivered remarks at a Catholic organization's breakfast meeting and blasted bans on the use of taxpayer funds for private religious schools. 1.1 million students in New York City get their education in 1800 public schools – the largest school system in America. DeVos did not step foot in any of them.

The schools she did visit are reportedly part of a larger system that has been under investigation for three years, The New York Times reports, amid charges the focus on religious education is so severe students who graduate are unable to function anywhere outside their religious community. One of the two schools reportedly discourages graduates from attending college.

DeVos used her time in the Big Apple to further her private charter school advocacy, and made no attempt to hide her extremist views, which have repeatedly been characterized as unconstitutional.

"I know very well there are powerful interests that want to deprive families their God-given freedom," DeVos told Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, during a breakfast meeting hosted by the Alfred E. Smith Foundation.

1. Do not visit the schools that are funded by the govt.
2. Do not visit schools that have Latino and black children
3. Visit schools that do not get their funding from the govt
4. Visit school where the majority of students are non-white

...For not doing the job you were hired to do. In my professional lifetime, I would have been fired in a heartbeat if I had refused to do the job I was hired to do. Guess billionaires are above that fray. She is absolutely worthless, like so many of tRumps appointees. When will this stop?

Does anyone appreciate how absurd this is?

Can you imagine a secretary of defense that refuses to visit a military base? Or a secretary of transportation that refuses to visit an auto plant?

She knows they exist and is sure they are somewhere between bad and evil. Maybe she thinks the badness might rub off on her if she sets her dainty little foot in one.

right after she was approved for the cabinet. I was a teacher so I went to the school district to complain and wrote a letter to protest her visit because she is an insult to educators and public education. When I got there I was told that she was un-invited by the school board and wouldn't be visiting after all. It was one of the few decisions by the board that I ever agreed with.

Secretary DeVos is the daughter-in-law of the man who founded Amway.

The motto of the Trump family has always been “what’s in it for me?” He surrounds himself with people who think the same way...so, is Amway planning to get into the charter school industry?

"Congress shall make NO LAW respecting an Establishment of Religion...."

If that doesn't ring any bells in your dim reptilian mind, then go back to school--a PUBLIC school!--where they will teach you about the United States Constitution, the First Amendment, and WHY we have it embedded deeply in our law!
