Trump administration moves to end ban on Alaska hunting practices many say are cruel

In a push to reverse yet another Obama-era regulation, the Trump administration moved yesterday to strike rules that forbid hunting methods on federal land in Alaska that many scientists and conservationists call cruel and inhumane.

A proposed rule published by the National Park Service in the Federal Register would let Alaskan game officials decide whether bear cubs can be killed alongside their mothers, caribou can be shot from a boat while swimming, wolves, including pups, can be hunted in their dens and other animals can be targeted from airplanes and snowmobiles. Animals could also be baited with sweets and killed or poisoned.

The Park Service said its proposal is consistent with an order by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to accede to states' wishes to expand recreational hunting.

. . .

While Alaska regulations prohibit some of the federally banned practices in certain areas, it allows them in others. Under President Barack Obama, Interior argued that the state was allowing the more deadly techniques as part of an aggressive predator-control effort that threatened to disrupt the balance of wildlife in the wilderness.

Some of us have fought so hard to protect our natural legacy and for the wildlife who are endangered by man. Wolves have been of special interest to me as they were wiped out in Minnesota. I was one of the happiest people on the planet when they were reintroduced to northern Minnesota due to a lot of hard work done by myself and others. When I hear a wolf howl in the wilderness, I know all is right in the wild. To kill mothers and babies puts those populations at risk and they already have a hard enough time surviving. I have never before felt the disgust and anger this administration brings out in me. There is a special place in hell for these people. In a nation of laws, these predatory humans are not above that law and I pray they find that out in the near future. I won't be around to see all the damage undone, but I have hope that there are others who will carry on this important work. Our children and grandchildren deserve to have a future where wildlife is protected and valued. When there are no more wild animals, human will follow shortly over the precipice into oblivion.

Thanks for your moral stance in the world, and your consciousness.

If only people would awaken......

Here's a website with live cams for wolf lovers which operates in New York, sheltering and trying to raise wolves for future life in environments deemed to allow animals to live without monsters trying to destroy them. It's Wolf Conservation Center.

Hoping so fervently the good WILL outlive evil, in the end, pazzyann. Thank you.

I remember visiting northern Minnesota as a child in the 1950's. A wolf named Lobo was the last wolf in Minnesota, and he was preserved through taxidermy. That wolf started me on my love of wolves and the need to bring them back to Minnesota. It has been a long hard fight, but not only are they back, but we have the International Wolf Center at Ely, MN (near the Boundary Waters) that came into being because of the people who came together with a mission. Today the center is widely used by schools and other community groups as an educational and information center. And you are absolutely right about hearing wild wolves calling to each other. It is one of the greatest sound in the world to me, and every time I hear their howls, a great satisfaction spreads through me. They are amazing animals. This did not happen without opposition, but extensive work and working with ranchers, farmers, and wolf activists groups have produced a place where wolves live free as they were meant to with very little interference by man. Livestock loss was addressed by establishing a fund where ranchers and farmers would be reimbursed for the livestock lost to wolves. That loss was much less than was feared thanks to a healthy deer and moose population in that area. I am including the link to the International Wolf Center. It is a place of wonder for Minnesota's children and wolf nuts like me:

The Trump administration on Tuesday presented a plan to roll back Obama-era rules preventing hunters in some protected zones in Alaska from luring bears with bait including bacon and donuts, and using spotlights at den sites to hunt black bear cubs and sows.

Under former president Barack Obama the National Park Service (NPS) in 2015 had prohibited a number of practices -- considered cruel and harmful by animal protection groups -- on national preserves in Alaska.

In addition to baiting and use of spotlights, banned methods include hunting wolves and coyotes during their denning season, the use of dogs to hunt bears, and the killing of swimming caribou from motor boats.

The NPS in a statement said reversing the ban on those practices would "establish better consistency" within the state of Alaska, where such methods are allowed in areas not under federal protection.
